Fast Food Workers Stage Strike, Demand Higher Minimal Wage.

http://touch.latimes.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-76836322/

I just saw these articles claiming fast food workers are/have/will stage a massive walkout protesting the 7.35 minimal wage. They demand a $15 an hour minimal wage, which is a massive increase, being able to unionize without consequences and better working conditions.

Fortunately, I never had to work Fast Food in High School and College, though my job didn't pay too much better. Also I don't eat Fast Food anymore. I do feel for those who do have to work fast food but I believe $15 is too high, especially when a good percentage of Fast Food workers are high school age. If minimal wage does get increased to $15 an hour then, more than likely, goods and services will increase as well. This increase in minimal wage will affect those who make above minimal wage as their wages are not increasing but the price of living is.

Not to mention, this will give gas companies an excuse to raise prices as now they have to pay workers more, or so they will claim.

NSG, what are your opinions? Do you think the USA can handle a minimal wage increase to $15 an hour? While I would like to see minimal wage increase, $15 an hour is too much.

Also, for those who do work or eat Fast Food did this walkout actually occur?

$15 is way too much to ask and it would just about negate corporate profits and drive up the price of my artificially-cheap Big Mac. I think that $10/hr is a fairly safe number to agree on as a minimum wage.

Not the precious corporate profits! Anything but that! Those millionaires and billionaires need that money! D:

Minimum wage should be enough for a family to live on. I'm not sure about the technicalities of what that entails, so I don't know if $15/hr is enough, too much, or too little, but I do know that $7.35/hr is too little.

Glad they're striking, $7 an hour is very difficult to live on.

As a fast food worker, i definitely agree wages should be higher, but not that absurdly high.

They probably intentionally asked too much so that they can "reluctantly" accept $10 per hour after negotiations.

Even if this happens, it's not going to be a win for the workers. Positions will be cut, and general expenses slashed in every possible way to make up for the dent in profit margins. I foresee fast food companies moving towards further automation.

I'll admit $15 an hour for that kind of job is a little high.

Please don't spout bullshit claims about unions encouraging laziness. Nothing is wrong with people wanting fair wages for a better life.

I'd advocate for something higher, but $15 seems a hell of a lot better than $7.50.

I think $15 an hour is too high, but I'd support $9-$10. My state has a minimum wage of $9.19 an hour, and no, we have not collapsed into mass unemployment. Washington's unemployment rate is below 7%. It was slightly above the national average for a while, but it's back down now.

You're right, collective bargaining has never caused any kinds of positive changes in the workplace, especially not improvements to health and safety standards, or forced corporate accountability for gross negligence. All hail president Ronald.

We all forget about how work was fair, productive and safe in the 19th century before those lazy union thugs came around.

The wages from fast food service aren't enough to live on, but fast food restaurants as they are currently, run off of a meager profit margin which makes it impossible to raise wages.

The only way would be to increase the price of the food items which could make it too expensive to where not enough people will purchase the fast food at the higher price. A fast food job is really only meant as a second job or for summer and not so much as a career, unless you move up to a management position or become a franchise owner.

When your wage only pays for half of your expenses, doubling it is rather necessary.

I'd settle for $9 myself. 2 more dollars per hour is definitely good enough for me when it's added up.

Fast food restaurants meager profit margins? Yeah, no, fast food companies have a boatload of money.

Edit: Also a lot of fast food workers aren't there as a summer job, or a second job. No that pays for their living, so a raise would be a great thing.
