So I watched this town hall meeting, and I heard someone shouting at the man, "I'm scared of Obama!" When asked why, they replied, "Because he's a socialist!" In the documentary "Patriocracy", a tea party elderly woman was yelling at the aforementioned man (a former Republican representative ((Bob Ingles)) that "McCarthy had it right". This brings up something interesting: Why is do a few parts of America act so afraid and antagonistic towards Socialist and Communism? Those who do such treat it like it is the boogeyman who is out to get you.

NSG, my question is: is McCarthyism still present in America? (Well, of course it is, seeing as how so many people seem to want to delimb communists.) If so, how strong is it? (I'm going to test this by singing The Internationale in a trailer park in Mississippi. They'll probably kill me because anything they haven't heard of is un-American.) Why do you think it is still somewhat strongly present in some places? (Because the people alive during the Red Scare are spreading the scare to their descendants.)

I checked and there's no communists nor socialists under my chair. OP is a bundle of sticks.

If by McCarthyism you mean anti-communism or anti-socialism, it's still present. Not to the point where they'll attack you, no. Then again I live in SoCal, so who knows what would happen if you said that in Bumfuck, Missouri.

I tried watching Patriocracy but had to stop when they used the word "far-left" and "Congress" in the same sentence without it being a joke.

McCarthyism is still alive in America. Socialism is widely feared here but the real fear lies in ignorance. Most people are for a workplace democracy but they don't identify that with socialism because they don't know what socialism is.

The thing is, socialism (workplace democracy) can exist within a capitalist market but capitalism can't exist within a socialist market.

Most people are perfectly fine with the existence of workers cooperatives and workplace democracy within the overall capitalist market - they just don't want those organization methods to be mandatory as they would be under a socialist system.

You can actually go pretty far. Oligarchies can be fundamentally Republican in structure, like Ancient Rome or PRI-era Mexico. And of course they can be both right and left-wing.

Well, the Cold War didn't end too long ago. It's still in living memory of the majority of Americans. Coupling that with Reagnite propaganda and there may be part of the answer.
