Finally the UN is standing against some of the policies of its more oppressive members. This will also give more developed nations no excuses to prevent the establishment of total legal equality for the LGBTQI community.

The main problem is the US still doesn't have LGBT equality, and that looks very bad for the movement.

I was stating that they didn't, and that improvements around the world would remove the ability of the US to hold off of offering total equality. It would remove the ability for homophobes to say "well I at least don't want homosexuality to be illegal even if I am opposed to same-sex marraige" and consider it to be an act of tolerance. What the movement needs the most is to end the deaths, torture, and imprisonment it is currently subjected to in many countries, and that is something every developed nation, even the US, can agree on.

It's social engineering. It's mainly focused in changing the social attitudes about homosexuality on a large scale.

Of course you can give gays rights, but will it be tolerated should be just as important.

Ending slavery (at least in the US) wasn't social engineering, because after Slavery was outlawed the southerners took out their racism in different ways. Social engineering would consider changing the southerner's attitudes about slavery.
