common law!

Did God have any governmental structure in place? Was there any international acknowledgement that God was a legitimate country? Did God even have a flag?

It is. "Instead of expanding the definition of marriage to include more people, let's just ban it!" It's nothing more than a red herring.

They think we're dumb enough to actually fall for that shit. I know they don't care about banning marriage. They only say that to hide how they don't want icky gheys getting married, and expect us not to see it.

It all seems like a very elaborate way of trying to avoid the issue of LGBT marriage equality.

Dude, my brother is gay and in a long term relationship. I live in country that's just passed a gay marriage bill that I totally support. I love him and his boyfriend.

I'm mostly just thinking out loud about how we could improve a system that's thousands of years old and seems to cause a lot of problems in the modern world.

But please, carry on trying to paint me as a homophobe.....

I've seen it all now. The lesbian sister card and now the gay brother card. Just because you may have an LGBT sibling, it doesn't mean you're someone who cares about marriage equality.

I can't see any other reason than because they want to make the discussion about the flaws of marriage, to distract everyone from the real flaw how it's not legal for LGBT people.

They must think they are so very clever for this inane argument the UN doesn't have the resources (but only when it's about LGBT rights, otherwise the UN is never overstretched), and now these totalitarian ideas to have marriage be time-limited contracts.

That's what God wants you to think (overflowing with sarcasm right now. In case you didn't notice). The country of France is also a gigantic sheet of toilet paper which will one day be used to wipe Uranus.

*sigh...*

How am I hiding homophobia? I think gay marriage should be TOTALLY legal, and the LGBT community should not be denied rights or be prosecuted in any way.

HOWEVER, there are a few things that I think are more important than civil liberties (shocker, I know), i.e. children not starving to death. Imagine you're a starving child in Africa, and someone tells you that you don't have food because some of the nations that are wealthier per capita, than, say, Rwanda, by several orders of magnitude, care more about the right to marry who you want than someone else's right to live.

However, as we've seen from a lot of civilized countries, it's not the end of the fucking world to go through that political fight.

People would still have the right. The right to enter into a contract is protected in the majority of countries and it may even open up a few rights to women in the places where they're still pretty oppressed.

lol. How do you figure? Wouldn't their husbands just agree to sign the more repressive versions of the contracts?

I mean, really, how is this supposed to improve anything at all? We already have an agreement (it's more than a contract) that is protected by all countries (all countries respect each other's marriages as long as the marriages are legal in their country) and you want to replace it with what? A contract that's respected by some countries in which the parties pick and choose---which can mean that they pick and choose versions that are more repressive toward women---for what benefit exactly?

You think the fucking homophobes will be happy that they get to keep "marriage" pure by keeping same sex couples out of it? Is that it?

Or do you just have no clue what marriage entails and what rights come with it?

You do realize that the U.N can do multiple things at once, right? And that they're already taking relatively good care of the different situations in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia, right?

Yes, there are a lot of other important things. However, I think the UN knows how to multitask so don't you worry!
