These forums sometimes contain very intelligent and informative discussions (if one wades through the chaff in a thread). But most of the time it is little better than the average Middle school. And, apparently, that is acceptable to Max.

It is my own damn fault for expecting to debate complex issues with adults in the chaos of a poorly supervised Middle school playground.

I will repeat that I do think this is something that has changed over time. That is to say, if this forum had always been "a poorly supervised middle school playground," I never would have hung around this long.

I drift away from NSG for long stretches of time, so I have no real sense for when/how this transition took place. It's only really been over the course of this thread that I even pinpointed the feeling that a transition had taken place. I feel like the forum used to be geared more toward adults, or at least more prone to encourage adult discussions, and now it is more geared toward minors.

One of the reasons I mainly post in the RP forums with a fairly small group of other RPers, these days. Also, lack of time, and, not least importantly, the number of warnings and temporary bans I'd started accumulating.

Right. I hold some pretty 'controversial' opinions (pro-death penalty, for example, and against holocaust-denial being a legal matter) but I don't think people think I'm trolling because I'm consistent and - perhaps more importantly - not a dick about it.

Yeah. And of course, it's not just not being a dick to people in the thread, but also not being a dick in general. It's one thing to say that the death penalty should be in place because some people can't be rehabilitated (or justice or whatever) and it's another thing to say that all criminals (even the shoplifters) are monsters who deserve nothing but death in an arena while being fed to lions (and aired on Pay Per View).
