Possibly because they're both good at what they do and are therefore, in a way, less memorable as mods.

Arch, in particular, I think of being a very well-credentialed academic and all-round good guy before I think of him being a mod.

Criticism, even unfair criticism, of Moderations decisions, policies, etc.

Calling a group of Mods criminals if beyond the pale. Based on limited information, I am outraged by what appeared to have happened. But even the worst interpretation of the worst allegations I have seen does not amount to criminal activity.

It is not surprising that any group of humans will make mistakes. Even huge, horrifying, seemingly incomprehensible errors. It is not realistic or reasonable to expect that not to happen. Overreacting and demanding harsh punishment upon members of Moderation will not help and will only discourage anyone with any sense from wanting to be a Mod.

The circling of wagons, refusal to admit mistakes, refusal to correct errors, and absurd excuses are a whole different and very real problem. Threatening to tar and feather Mods will make that problem worse and give them every reason to write off criticism as hysterical rants.

This is not up for debate. Under US federal law, there are abundant criminal implications for Zeonic States' use of this forum to discuss not just his illegal activity, but also advocate for and aid others to commit similar acts. Having been informed of this, refusing to act and to continue to allow him the use of this forum and not take reasonable efforts to prevent and report constitutes aiding and abetting.

This is not something to joke about. In all likelihood, nothing would have come of it. But let's be frank: there was a potentially criminal level of negligence going on, and it is not beyond the pale to suggest it.

I am not joking about it. I take both the allegation and the underlying assertions very fucking seriously. Which is precisely why I am saying allegations of criminal conduct should not be thrown around.

I understand the relevant law quite well, thank you. I do not think anyone has even alleged facts that come anywhere near criminal conduct. Whether you agree or not, that is an informed, somewhat-professional opinion.

Regardless, if you or anyone else thinks a crime was committed, report it to the appropriate authorities. Waving a bloody shirt and making accusations here does nothing productive. To the contrary, it is irresponsible and inappropriate. IIRC, it may well violate the TOS/rules. And it is fucking wrong. You are making serious allegations on insufficient facts in the wrong place.

Now, granted, I'd say that probably 75%-80% of these are either DEAT or timed out. So that gives us about what, about 90k active posters?

Probably less than that. Let's go for 50k.

There are 25 moderators and admins that operate on the forums. Twenty-five. That's just patently not enough.

Even if we assume, say, 5-10k, that's still an absurd proportion.

Wouldn't it make more sense to look at the number of posts per day?

Abusive TG? WARNED! Abusive TG again? DEAT!
Abusive RMB post? WARNED! Itty bitty flame on the forums? DEAT!
Crash a region with a bunch of UN multies? (Yes, UN, back in the pre-Influence glory days!) EJECTED! Make a bunch more multies again? DEAT the lot of 'em!

No need for tailoring punishments like forumbans, RMB/TG blocks, and the like. Just one, two, STAB! The users fell like bumble bees in the Northwest! Only the fittest users could survive the nuclear modbomb barrage!

What we've got now is a completely sorry excuse for mod tyranny, the squad ought to be ashamed of themselves for letting standards slip so far. Honestly, trying to give foolish users a chance to actually improve and change their behavior? APPALLING! We can see right here how well that has worked out, right? Completely absurd, unutterably asinine to think that users are actually capable of changing their behavior. They clearly are not, so put them DOWN already. It's not like Old Yeller is is going to get better, people!

Bring back the two-strikes style of moderation! That'd wipe out at least half of NSG within a week!

RULES OF NS:

- Don't call other people trolls, even if they're being trolls.
- Don't expect your reports of trolls to be taken seriously.
- Don't expect any of the mods to be on to respond to your problems in a timely manner.
- Don't expect the mods to ban people who are breaking serious laws until months after the first post.
- Don't expect the mods to act on the first report.
- Don't expect the mods to not ban your ass for spamming moderation if you make multiple reports about the same problem.
- Don't expect the mods to do shit to fix any problems with the moderation system.
- Don't expect the mods to take your complaints about the system seriously.
- Don't complain about the aforementioned rules.
