Amash amendment shot down by Congress and White House

Postby Rawrckia » Wed Jul 24, 2013 6:28 pm

Just a few hours ago, Congress voted against the Amash amendment.

In case you haven't been following the Amash amendment, it basically says that the NSA can no longer freely crawl through your phone calls, internet data, etc. without a warrant.

Yesterday the White House openly condemned the proposed amendment and claimed it would only help destroy counterterrorism.

Thoughts? White House is supporting a policy that rips the Bill of Rights into small squares and wipes its ass with it, and the bill had bipartisan resistance.

I'm going to have to agree with your opinion.

I hope the Amash amendment goes through congress again.

Good. Mindlessly searching through people's belongings, history and data only harms a country in the long term. It doesn't matter if you manage to stop a few terrorists if you lose the people's trust in the process.

At least the majority of Democrats, and a sizable number of Republicans, actually gave a shit about the Fourth Amendment. Even though I am left disappointed in the Congress once again I''m glad the vote was so close.

The NSA doesn't "freely crawl" through anyone's phone calls or Internet data &/c. without a warrant. They do require a warrant, and they get their warrants via the proper legal channels. They record only the caller, the one being called, the duration of the call and the frequency of calls where phone calls are concerned. I cannot speak about Internet data collection.

I would agree with the White House on its announcement.

This kind of makes you wonder why there is even a need for amendments like this to be proposed in the first place. If the government didn't 'rip the Bill of Rights into small squares and wiped its ass with it' then there shouldn't have to be anything like this

Are we really surprised by this? The Us has been turning the Constitution and Bill of Rights into toilet paper for decades at least. And we always get angry about it...for five minutes and then the news starts talking about Royal Babies and we forget all about it.

I had high hopes for it, but I'm not surprised it didn't pass. The US Government has clearly demonstrated it doesn't give a shit about its people or their rights.

There is a lot of evidence that congress is a greedy, suppression loving government body.
