I'm divided. On one side, I'd like to see it eliminated. On the other side, I think the statistics could serve a purpose.


I always feel uncomfortable on applications where I am supposed to identity my race/ethnicity. Technically, in the eyes of the government, I could qualify as a "Hispanic or Latino". However, I look white (I'm blond, blue eyed, my name is William, and I'm whiter than sour cream), subscribe to Anglo-American culture as actively as possible, and consider myself to be a "white American".

However, my parents want me to succeed (nothing wrong with that), and they always tell me to say that I'm "Hispanic or Latino" in order to take advantage of affirmative action programs various schools and companies have in place. This part, I hate. I do not consider myself to be Hispanic or Latino. However, my parents make me put it down anyways.

It feels really wrong, for a number of reasons. 1. I'm not a Hispanic or Latino. 2. I'm cheating the system.


This is partly why I'd like to see the race label eliminated from applications, and partly why I'm opposed to affirmative action.

I disagree. We have made strides in areas. When I was a kid; people would openly stare at a black/white couple. This was the liberal state of California. Now? People look but it's more passing then out right stares.

That's not right either, unless you're willing to tell me that the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments are racist. They were formulated, quite explicitly, to help black people.

It's racism if you help a certain race because of your expectations of that race.
