Per taxpayer? That doesn't seem right. Given that the UK's total population is just upwards of 60,000,000.

£1 = $1.50. Roughly.

Another important thing to remember is that the Monarchy is rich. So, depending on how this figure was arrived at, it could be they spend a lot more themselves.

Americans don't quite understand why the Royals matter to so many. The birth raised spirits for some. Others couldn't care less. Part of me wishes I were home with family in Toronto just to enjoy the buoyant atmosphere. The event draws us together across the miles.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

And the birth was followed by terrible storms, thunder and lightning, flooding throughout the entire kingdom.

It's just over-hyped sensationalism for the depressed masses.

The crown has no real power... it has no real purpose other than the ceremonial... therefore, it's irrelevant in modern politics.

Why would someone's spirits be raised by the birth of someone they don't even know?

Raise the bunting, we have a new heir-apparent!

The weather is a bit of a shifty omen though.

I understand why many British people are excited about all of this.

But why Americans?

I don't see what's so great about a royal family. So the same family rules for 83926905827 years? Not that exciting.

Because we don't really get to celebrate the Presidential baby now do we? I'm mildly interested in it although I can't say I'm jumping for joy.

He doesn't have one yet (just "Baby Cambridge"). There are currently bets on what he will be called, though. Elvis seems to have particularly long odds.

Elvis - or Elfeis, or Ailbe - is a fine Celtic name, and therefore wholly appropriate for this future Prince of Wales.

I have personally seen the St. Elvis Rocks off the coast of St. Elvis Parish, in the shadow of the Preseli hills, near St. David's; a wholly appropriate location given St. Elvis baptised St. David.

And no, I'm not making this up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Elvis,_Pembrokeshire

They mentioned it on CNN as having long odds. And since he isn't the Prince of Wales yet (or likely to be unless Charles dies) I don't see why he needs to have a Celtic name. They should give "Baby Cambridge" a name that fits in with his current title.
