11 Year-Old Yemeni Girl Gives Profound Monologue On Arranged

Postby The Spiral Future » Sun Jul 21, 2013 2:12 pm

http://au.businessinsider.com/nada-al-a ... elf-2013-7

A video posted to LiveLeak today features a profound monologue by an 11 year-old Yemeni girl whose family attempted to force her into an arranged marriage.

Nada Al-Ahdal says she fled to her uncle’s house, and that people close to her have threatened to kill her if she does not get married. Arranged marriages at a young age are common in that region.

A common response, says Ahdal, is for those kids to commit suicide.

“It’s not [the kids'] fault. I’m not the only one. It can happen to any child.”

“Some children decided to throw themselves into the sea, they’re dead now. They have killed our dreams, they have killed everything inside us. There’s nothing left. There is no upbringing. This is criminal, this is simply criminal.”

Needless to say, Ahdal’s words are utterly profound for an 11 year-old.

Here is the video link : http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f76_1374406429

I think this is quite incredible, after all this little girls life could be under threat now. I commend her courage for speaking out like this. I believe this may be a sign of the changing times no matter how far away that change may be.

What is your view on this matter NSG? Do you agree or disagree with this young girl? How do you view the parents?

I now absolutely side with the CULTURAL practice of arranged marriages, if only to spite obnoxious self righteous dickheads. Youve convinced me of their merit.

Arranged marriages have benefits when done in a civilised fashion.

This is not a civilised fashion.

Arranged marriages are the main fashion of marriage in my country of India. They work like this:

A bride decides she wants to be married, or a groom does. They start writing applications, share them around and then head out on a date, meet one another and see what their opinion of the other is. Or no applications and families just pair up their sons and daughters and set them up.

If they like the other, they get married. If the marriage begins to fall apart, any member of the duo can request a divorce. And it's entirely and completely optional.

Hmmmmmmm I see, but couldn't this also open the door for coercion(especially in the case of families setting them up) and is there an age limit? Is this a problem in India at all?

Well if you're going to include that definition under "arranged marriage", then you might as well include all marriages under it, because all marriages are arranged, after all.

That's the traditional definition in my country of arranged marriage. The family is who typically arranges it, with the actual bride and groom along for the ride.

Forced marriages are wrong. Arranged marriages are tolerable.

It is good for people, such as this girl, to speak out against forced marriage.

This is a forced marriage, not an arranged one. One of them is fine, another is fucking wrong.

That's just a blind date.

By your definition. It's arranged marriage by ours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arranged_m ... bcontinent

Commonly in urban areas and increasingly in rural parts, parents now arrange for marriage-ready sons and daughters to meet with multiple potential spouses with an accepted right of refusal.[20] These arranged marriages are effectively the result of a wide search by both the girl's family and the boy's family.[21] Child marriages are also in steady decline and deemed unlawful in India (with legal age of marriage at 21 years for men and 18 years for women), so the term "arranged marriage" now increasingly refers to marriages between consenting adults well past the age of sexual maturity.

As Wiki explains it better than I.
