A female Lord Protector? what to change?

This is an OOC question.

My nation is ruled by a Stratocracy. The head of state is called the Lord Protector and is elected every five years via popular vote of worthy citizens.

I intend to have a female LP at some point but not sure what to call her.

"Lord" is a high status male by definition. So I need a to replace the "Lord" part of the title (But I am keeping the "Protector" part) after a woman wins the election.

I want the name to have authority, leadership, and be feminine.

Any suggestions?

Possible ideas: Lady Protector, Madam Protector, Mistress Protector.

Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

The British Stratocracy isn't a monarchy (or a Republic). its a Stratocracy.

Lady Protector, or just stick with Lord Protector as Ostroeuropa suggested.

Lady is the usual alternative for Lord, however Ostroeuropa's idea could also work.

Actually it's Duke of Normandy and that title is only used in the Channel Islands.

This nation should not be taken to be representative of my real-life views, nor should any of the nonsense I posted on here as a teenager.

Na, I really feel that "Lord" is a male term. And "Lady" just doesn't have the authoritarian sound to it (No offence to females everywhere).

It needs to sound strong.

Dame Protector doesn't sound as "Great leader" as baroness.

but still I can't help but feel there is a better feminine title

Lady Protectress, sounds reasonable. Is Protectress a word? never heard it before.

Brythonica's head of state is titled Lord President. We had a female Lord President, Hilda Roberts, from 1983–1990. We didn't change the title for her (by her request actually).

I really don't see what the problem is with 'Lord Protector', to be honest. technically, it would just act as one of those awkward conventions - just like the Queens of Egypt had to be called 'Pharaohs' (which was a male title), it isn't stupid or illogical to have a female leader take on a male title, because it follows standard convention. It definitely works if your nation has a strict culture.

Yes, it's a word. In these enlightened times, we're not allowed to use feminine forms of words like "Protector" because to some ears they sound diminutive. But "Tiger - Tigress", "Emperor - Empress", therefore...

What about Mother Protector? It corresponds from your matriarchal paganism based religion. What better way for the first woman in power of a highly militaristic nation to say "I'm in control, I'm strong" then to align herself with the main deity of the nation.

Men and women share total equality in the Militarist Union. But female holders of public office feminize their titles to signify their gender. It a matter of pride for them, as they see having male titles as unrepresentative of themselves.

For example, female members of the Imperator council are called Imperatrix.
