Yeah. "It makes me uncomfortable that there might be a gay guy near me and I don't even know" is close to "But what if they make the children gay?" in terms of signs of homophobia.

I'm not a homophobe, but I'm scared a gay might be near me.

Isn't kinda like, the textbook definition of a homophobe?

Great drinking game for a party with a tropical theme :D

No, it was, "We're different, we act how we want. If you try to piss on us for it, we'll break your fucking nose."

No, that's not how homophobes think.

The majority of society is now accepting.

lollllll

It's the minority that are a problem.
With them, it's the perceived alien nature of homosexuality that is the problem.

So?

No. YOU are part of gay culture. The fact that you are heteronormative is irrelevant. Take part in a parade, join a rights organization, or participate in some way in the community at large, and you're part of the culture. Neil Patrick Harris isn't effeminate, but he takes part in rallies and marches. Ellen DeGeneres is somewhat androgynous without being at all butch, but she's definitely part of the culture. You don't need to dress in drag, to lisp, to snap your fingers, or to shave yourself down, oil yourself up, and dance to club music in order to be part of the culture. You just have to accept the fact that it's there, and participate in your own way. Or you could also opt out, but then you forfeit your moral right to complain that you aren't being represented. Want people to see that gay people are diverse? Then be part of the diversity!

Why on earth would I want to spend time with the kinds of people who think their sexuality is worth making such a fuss over?
Literally the only reason I can think of is the reason you point out. That if I don't go, i wont be represented. And as such, people will get the impression that gays are just like that.
So in essence, because you people refuse to rename the culture, i'm being forced to either participate, or to face misinformation that you are propogating.
Why can't you just rename it, and then I can not participate in peace.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Here's the fun thing: most straight people I know are absolutely cool with it. The ones who aren't cool with it (like you) aren't going to accept gay people in any way unless they're totally in the closet and self-hating, so there's no point in trying to get you to change your mind. Therefore, why should they care what you think?

The rest of society is already coming over to our side. Another generation, maybe two, and all that is left of your mindset will be the mocking comments of our descendants as they wonder just why people like you even existed.

Can we at least agree that there are a spectrum of personality types under the umbrella of gay and that it sucks to try to exclude types you don't find personally appealing as either "too gay" or "not gay enough"?

Here's the other thing:

Most straight people I know spent at least one or two Spring Breaks getting shitfaced and taking their clothes off for beads, so seeing gay people do exactly the same shit doesn't give them a case of the vapors.
