It's taken both flamboyant gays and heteronormative ones to get to where we are today.

Actually, fried chicken and watermelon were served regularly during civil rights get-togethers in the South, as they're traditional Southern food. The malt liquor was frowned upon, though.

The majority of society is now accepting.
It's the minority that are a problem.
With them, it's the perceived alien nature of homosexuality that is the problem.

I don't mind if gays act gay. Makes it easier to identify them. The notion of secret gays among us makes me feel uncomfortable and I'm not even a homphobe. You'd never know if a guy is checking you out and that would be weird.

Shit. Better tell the Albertson's in my neighborhood to stop selling watermelon.

And make sure to tell them not to sell athletic shoes, we can't have people thinking that black people are good at athletics!

Most importantly, make sure to tell any black people who enjoy hip-hop or wear clothing that could plausibly be called "gangsta" (say...hoodies) not to show up, because we wouldn't want to send the message that THAT kind of black person deserves equal rights just as much as black people who conform more to dominant white culture.

Considering I used to be prejudiced agaisnt trans people, i'm guessing it is how they think.
I used to think it was weird, and they must have some kind of disorder.
And then I met one who was perfectly normal. (Admittedly, it was my first time meeting any of them at all).
At that point I thought, maybe this thing isn't what I thought it was about, and decided to actually look it up.
If they had been acting like a complete stereotype, i would have thought "yeh, definately fucking crazy." or something.
Now, this was before I actually started analyzing my own behaviour properly and actually giving a shit about politics. But it's events like this that caused me to do so in the first place.
