Best School Subject?

Postby Forsher » Tue Jul 16, 2013 8:37 am

Thread is a blatant repeat of this thread from way back when. But I also want to move into the territory of this thread because I'd prefer a more general focus on school subjects (and by school I really mean any subject studied in a school or even uni).

Yeah, so, anyway... What do you think of subjects at school/uni? Do you like the way they're taught? What's in them? What subjects do you take? Do you like them at all? Any good at them? Got one you're best at? These are the sort of questions I'd like to talk about.

I may not have liked English much last year (to the extent I don't do it any more) but it technically ended up as my best subject last year. This year I'm not really sure what my best subject is... I've got a lot of merits and excellences from all of them at a relatively even mix (except for history but we've only done two things and one hasn't been marked yet) so it's hard to split them up. However, I think I'll say I am doing best in economics at the moment based on the four tests for the internal.

For reference, I'm in Year Thirteen (final year) and take history, classics, study, drama, calculus and economics. I like all of them but I've found that study is often really useful. I'm kind of wondering what I did last year without it. I'm thinking of continuing with economics and history at uni.

What about you, NSG?

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a balanced attitude towards humanity in general.

Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.

Considering when I was in High School I get a perfect score on each of my History SOLs, I'm going to say History.

Are you asking me what I preferred, or what I was best at because I preferred history but my best subject was English.

I liked chemistry the most. Sadly my school was unable to offer it as an A level. My best results were in maths. I was hopeless at languages, and I disliked geography.

I'm best at economics although it's not most obvious. It is the only class I got an A overall in college instead of B- to A- types thus far. Chemistry is a close second.

Yay for math.

Back in (USA) high school, I was also pretty good in history, but then university and grad school kind of had me focusing on math, so I'm certainly stronger in that now. And I always enjoyed the sciences. English was generally a struggle. I wasn't the best student at younger ages, and the English teacher in my middle school was not motivated/motivating, so it was a bad combination to get the basics there.

I never took economics, I think physics or precalc (my school didn't have a full calculus, but this was 90% of a Calc I) conflicted with Econ.
Male. I think that's all for now.

Foreign Languages (good teachers, felt worthwhile), History (because it's kinda interesting, albeit in a not-very-useful way), Chemistry (because it's all about shapes and that), and English Language (because it was somewhere between sociology and poetry).

I was advised to drop Chemistry at A-Level and replace it with a Spanish course, which I did, and to this day regret having done.

(I technically did best in French and German, so that's the poll pick)
