Actually, while no one knows exactly who first discovered the West Indies, the smart money is on the ancestors of the people who were living there.

Jesus was for separation of church and state. I don't see how so many people managed to skip over "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's".

If you want to show how rational and skeptical you are, it helps to not spout sweeping generalizations every 5 threads.

In what way is what I wrote clumsy "New Atheist" invective? By and large, medicine uses pretty much whatever treatments have been shown to work without too much by way of side effects. Most forms of alternative medicine have no evidence backing them beyond the placebo effect (see the earlier link about acupuncture, for example, where "fake acupuncture" with the needles in the "wrong" places works much like as the "real thing").

You were spot on. It's completely appropriate to use sweeping statements when they actually apply. For instance, "All canines are mammals." Likewise, "If alternative medicine actually worked, it would be called medicine." Simple, factual, true.

Indeed, the few things that the alternative medicine crowd try to claim as their own which actually work are really just mainstream medicine that they stuck some crystals on. For instance, sensible dietary suggestions, physical programs such as yoga, and relaxation exercises.

That's nice. I'm still waiting for evidence that people are buying the book because it's good.

Why are you arguing with me, then?

I was just pointing out how you can know a book sucks by reading it (or part of it) and not spend money on it.

Cause heaven knows there are no other confounding variables when you compare the city of Chicago to the state of Iowa...

Free Soviets wrote:evolution is true. climate change is real and dangerous. the american civil war was about slavery.

some things are easily shown to be true and have been known for years. and yet, somehow, huge swaths of the population either don't know or outright deny them. that strikes me as fundamentally ridiculous. i mean, even things that have been repeatedly discussed in the media are sometimes reported by that same media organization as new and surprising each time. why? what stops some things from sinking in?

for example, marijuana fights cancer. no, seriously. marijuana fights cancer. every time i mention this, nobody believes me. but it's even on the national cancer institute's website. each new study and report on the subject is like a crazy 'whoa!' moment for the media and/or the internet (and possibly society at large?) for exactly two days, then it just washes away. it's weird.

also, i'm interested to see if i'm just as much part of the problem as anyone else. got any other examples of things that should be common knowledge by now but aren't?

Proper spelling and grammar of each individual's shared language. No, really. Communication only works if all parties have the same understanding of language conventions, otherwise bad things happen.
