SyFy channel going downhill?

Postby New Maldorainia » Fri Jul 12, 2013 5:16 pm

The SyFy channel (formerly Sci-Fi channel) has, from my perspective been going downhill lately. The latest travesty was the movie, and I kid you not, Sharknado. Yes, and it is apparently just what it sounds like. Even more so was that they cast party girl Tara Reid in the movie. Not really one of the best choices and frankly, it is Tara Reid, enough said.

The SyFy channel use to do shows that were actually good, like the Stargate series. They still do some decent programming, but for the most part it seems that the channel as a whole seems to be going downhill when you do movies like the aforementioned Sharknado. So what goes NSG think, the channel going downhill, or are movies like this just an exception?

SyFylis' movies have always been crap. From what I've seen, they're still doing good shows.

Oh come on. This deserves a thread? Are we going to go though every channel out thee and critique them each?

There was a time when they had some things going, but hey. They've always had a lot of lower-budget films. But granted, it got stupid once changed their name to be more like syphilis and less science-fictiony. Alas. Still, they are what they are, and we all know it. Which doesn't negate the occasional fun that can be had with them. You don't want to watch? Then don't. Simple as that.

Heard the director interviewed live on one of the local radio stations here the other day. Why did they do Sharknado? More or less 'why not'. They just wanted to cut loose and have fun with it, and that's what they did. More power to 'em. I think we have enough snobs and self-important puffed-up folks making millions off of over-hyped tripe as is.

So yeah. You don't want to take the risk of having a giggle over a silly bit of film, then watch something else. Not a big deal :)

Both SyFy and the History Channel I'm afraid. Granted now that 2012 has passed they have both stopped showing a bunch of doomsday stuff but it's still pretty much all conspiracy theories, swamp people, ice road truckers, pawn stars, american restoration, and american pickers, oh and aliens, can't forget them aliens. Now the Military Channel, that's the place to go if you want a few good documentaries anymore because History only shows documentaries on very special days.

Unfortunately, television these days seems to mainly focus on the lowest common denominator. There's still quality shows out there, but 99% of television is absolute sewer flotsam.

I rarely watch the television these days, except for the news. If there's a show I really must see, then I'll download it/stream it/record it. There really isn't any need to be spoon fed the garbage that gets put out if you've got the internet.

It's not just that, but watching such low grade entertainment feels like my life is literally ebbing away. It's a equivilant of junk food. Seems nice at the time, but afterwards you realise it has no value, and you've gained nothing from it.

The movies are craptastic - comedically so. So are the "reality" shows and the wrestling nonsense, but there are some gems - like Defiance. There really is so little good TV anywhere that you take what you can.

SciFi originals are supposed to be bad.

The network started going downhill when that new director guy came in and started calling his core audience "basement dwellers," then brought on wrestling and began cancelling actual, you know, science fiction shows.

And now they're wondering why their ratings have been dropping since 2006.
I AM DISAPPOINTED
