For the record, the FAiL isn't the West's version of the AK. Funny thing is the FAiL gets points knocked off because it has an Imperial and Metric model which means parts can be confusing to find.
The AR-18 is the Western AK, if there even is any such thing.
Comparing a Battle Rifle to an Assault Rifle after certain points like comparing apples to oranges. Sure they are both round, taste good and are a fruit, but after that you begin to diverge away from the two.
The AK can be produced from shovels, left over parts and pieced together from different AK parts from different nations. You can drop an AK on its magazine, pick it up, empty it and the next four you have in your pouch and still use food fat to lubricate it's internals and motor oil to lube the barrel with your boot laces.
The FAL is a good rifle as is the G3, however those two are outclassed in terms of weight, usability and ease of production by the AK.
Also, do you know the modern battlefield's engagement range is under 300 meters? Its been like this since before World War 2. The max most armies train with modern assault rifles is to 400-500 meters with iron sights, farther with the use of optics. Under 300 meters bullet drop doesn't mean shit. Accuracy starts to not really matter when you use an AK or AR.
Also AR does little damage If you shoot someone with a 5.56x45mm round, 9/10 they will go down with at least an "ow".
This isn't a game or shooting wood targets 100 meters away.
I meant on terms of use 90 different nations used them. It was the right arm of the free world & from knowledge my dad a Rhodesian/South African used the FAL,G3,AK. He was in the Rhodesian bush war, South African Border war. Hes said time & time again only the FAL & G3 had that type of stopping power. But he said they were extremely heavy i own both & just one mag & the gun its self is not for the faint of heart. But you want something that WILL without a doubt reach out and touch someone & kill its the FAL or G3. & its not a FAiL its FAL...

Never said that, but early on it had some of the worst problems and rifle could have.

It is also commonly used by law enforcement; for example, each urban police foot patrol is issued at least one.

Doesn't make it a "special forces variant".
It was mostly liked for its short length. Most people who were issued with it - truck drivers for example - actually didn't like it. They'd try and get their hands on the full-sized AKS-74 if they could, while others tried to acquire Stetchkin machine pistols instead.
