On subject: I mentioned target shooting, an activity where the AR beats the AK hands down. As a military weapon, I would choose the AK however.

Supposedly, the ammunition is the kicker.
I don't know what the 5.56 civilian ammunition you can get is like and what its properties are - but logically, the fragmenting cartridges as used in the service rifles would probably spoil more meat.
Meanwhile, yawing M43/67 loads of 7.62 will spoil less meat and give you a more solid kill. Double the mass and a more consistent and effective wounding mechanic will do that for you.

I just noticed an ad for a new .30 carbine load from Hornady in my American Rifleman magazine, and got to wondering if anyone makes an AR in that calibre. If not, I am sure I could get one custom built.

BTW, did you know there was a 7.62x45mm cartridge? The same diameter as the 7.62x39mm Warsaw Pact round, with the same length as the 5.56x45mm NATO round. It was for the Chech vz52, but it was dropped for compatibility with Warsaw Pact standards. With slightly higher energy and ballistics than the 7.62x39mm M43 round, it ALMOST sounds like something I could get into, except for the fact that the brass is next to impossible to find (it pretty much has to be formed from other brass), and I'd have to figure out a barrel and magazines for it.

Couldn't you fire-form it from 5.56 brass?

Edit: Oh,and I had the same idea, looking into trying some of the new short magnums. I doubt that they will fir the bolt-face though. Maybe a new series of wildcats using a rebated rim.
