So Makemake made made humanity? :P

Nah Olthar is correct with this one, the name is pronounced Ma-ke-ma-ke not Make-make. It is a perfectly normal legitimate name not a in-joke for your amusement

Once again: the language that we are using here is English. In English, the word "makemake" is usually going to be read as "make-make". If you want it to be read different, you could use pronunciation symbols, like you did in that post, i.e. "Ma-ke-ma-ke", which ensures a different reading. Otherwise, I am going to use English when using English, and I don't see how that's ethnocentric.

So how would you pronounce Avignon or Carlisle?

English has no consistent pronunciation, being an incomprehensible mess of Norse, Old English, and French, with additions from hundreds of other languages. That might be a pain, but as an English speaker, you must learn that spelling only vaguely correlates with pronunciation, and learn the pronunciation of the english language one by one.

Took the words right out of my mouth. It amazes me that so many native speakers of a language as inconsistent as English aren't more concerned about learning proper pronunciation for unfamiliar words.

Erm, WRONG! Every language has some consistencies, such as the words "make, bake, cake, shake, take". Learning pronunciation of any language word by word will drive almost anyone insane, and that is absolutely horrendous advice to give to those who are trying to learn English. Instead, use this guide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_phonology

Carlisle is English, i.e. Carl's Isle. And, if I didn't get proper instructions on pronouncing Avignon, I'd most definitely mispronounce that. That's why mature people give out proper pronunciation guides to words borrowed from another language, and others babble about ethnocentrism, which contributes nothing to the discussion at hand.

I saw the word "Makemake" which I read as the commonly used word "make", which I already know how to pronounce because it's commonly used. Duh! Additionally, if I'm explaining why I'm not ethnocentric, well, you don't exactly need Sherlock Holmes to deduce that I wasn't the one who started this tangent now, do you?

I find it slightly sad when people can't accept that Pluto isn't a planet. If we can't accept this one, meaningless change, how are we going to accept any kind of scientific progress?

Even though Pluto doesn't care about its classification, I remember when it was a planet... oh nostalgia....

They totally should have grandfathered in Pluto.

If you can't accept scientific progress as simple as "oops, on a technicality we have to add the word "dwarf" to Pluto's classification", then how can you accept any scientific progress at all?

No, I'm afraid not. When they first came out with the idea that Pluto wasn't a planet, I naturally like many others knee-jerked an angry response at these people attacking a favorite cartoon dog.

But then you realize that there are other Dwarf planets in the Solar System and some of those, like Ceres in the Asteroid belt, are bigger than Pluto and you have to conclude that if Ceres can't be a planet in the Asteroid belt, then Pluto can't be a planet in the Kuiper belt, which also includes other Dwarf planets such as Makemake and Haumea.

According to Flaskjinia, If something doesn't meet the definition of something, Then it is not that. This is why Pluto is not considered a planet, Because it does not meet a planet's definition. -Simply put- Saying Pluto is a planet is like saying an Asteroid is a planet because it is part of a solar system.

I'm not an astronomer, I'm not an astro-physicist. What my personal opinion about the correct name for a rock billions of miles away is matters not in any way. Nor does my enjoying a slightly romantic view impact me in any way. If that changes then I can re-examine my opinion.

Until then, Pluto is a plant to me. :)

The fact that it does not matter is what is upsetting. If you can't change your opinion on a the name of a rock billions of miles away, how can you change your opinion on something that actually matters? Also, "Dwarf Planet" is the correct term, as in, that's a fact. You can't have an opinion on it, you are either right or you are wrong.
