Of course, there was no gay marriage in Greece. But it is a retrograde step in the sense that it marks a further dissolution of boundaries and markers, which leaves me trembling at the thought of the next moves back to Ancient Greece, a highly dissolute and immoral society.

Yes, like how the end of slavery, institutionalized sexism, and feudalism have destroyed society and all morals.

I don't know if section 2 will be subject to court review.
I figured best shoot was the ruled ruled the bill unseverable.

Judging from the court document I'm reading, it probably will never be up for review, since marriage itself is in the realm of the states.

If by it, you mean same-sex marriage, then it is still only legal in the states that have passed legislation legalizing it. The death of DOMA removes the federal restrictions on same-sex marriage that provided unfair treatment even for same-sex couples in states where their marriage was legal and also can easily be used to combat the bans in other states.

Actually, ancient Greece (no, you don't capitalize "ancient" here) was not a thoroughly depraved moral black hole. It had its share of things that are considered bad today, and probably should be, but it wasn't just a big pit of people stuffing their faces, getting drunk, throwing orgies, and murdering each other. Believing in depictions of it as such a society seriously undermines your credibility.

If you class yourself as a reactionary, you are by definition opposed to progress. Therefore you oppose progressive measures and support reactionary ones. Therefore measures you support are, in you eyes, reactionary. Therefore DOMA is reactionary in both my eyes and yours.

This is a huge precedent, though, so that's good. And another state legalized. And federal government legalized.

No, progress is determined by what advances the wellbeing of sentient beings. The death of DOMA absolutely accomplished this.
