A World Without the United States?

It entirely depends on what you mean by "without." Did they lose the Revolutionary War? In that case colonialism may still be widespread.

Did the government collapse and the nation is in anarchy? If the wrong person got control of the US's nukes and military arsenal in the chaos in the answer to "what would the world look like without the United States?" would be "dead."

Even if we are discussing only the nation being non-existent, and the landmass remains, there is simply too much room for conjecture to appropriately explore the concept. Most of you are fixating on the 20th century, mentioning the world wars, war on terrorism, etc., while failing to brig up all of the activity the USA was involved in during the late 18th and 19th centuries. How would world affairs have played out if the USA had not been involved? Further, for all of you non-Americans that love to hate the USA, think about the ugliness of your histories (and don't try to play holy here) and be honest about how your nation would have interacted during the 1800's without USA to work with/against. No, this is the stuff of a far more scholarly treatise than most people can muster.

If the US hadn't existed in the 1700s and 1800s, Canada would have had a far more peaceful existence without repeated invasion attempts and (at least far less numerous) Fenian raids.

And yet the US debts itself, borrowing money to aid other nations, cleaning other nation's messes.

Most of those messes... that were caused by the US in the first place.

That's why it would be great if it was gone! But at the same time... Much of the imperialism in society would not actually exist. Think of Latin America and the influence they gained from the United States. For all the bad influences the U.S.A has caused, they have to clean up their messes to make themselves look good.

However, it would be unlikely we'd be here if that 30 September event didn't happen in 1965. We'd be lead by a communist dictatorship, likely, and they'd restrict internet access. And as we know, the US is anti-communist, especially back then, yes?

Other than that, the entire world would use the metric system and American football wouldn't even be a thing. Seriously, it seems the entire world knows what it is yet only 1 nation actually plays it.

Well it would lead to the question of who would rise from ww2 as superpower? Could be Britain and its empire which may have survived without competition from America or perhaps whatever country filled America's gap in producing weaponry. In fact given that America created the atomic bomb, without that hitler may have got them first which would no doubt change the outcome of ww2.

Funny thing is its not making the world better when your the reason the problem is there in the first place, You are just cleaning up your own bloody mess that the world would be better without.

Personally, I think the world would be a lot worse without the US, both of the world wars would likely have been much worse, we might still be feeling the effects today, that is if we one in the first place. Communism would probably spread faster and further and we would be missing out on lots of good inventions.

Well, communism isn't so bad. I mean true communism, Marxist-Leninism, not Stalinism or Maoism. And definitely not Juche, because I refuse to accept Juche as communism. If there was worldwide communism, we'd be able to abolish money, taking us 1 step closer to a utopia.

That's assuming the Communism did win, because without the US, Germany and Russia would be the two countries to square off after Hitler bitch-slapped the rest of Europe. Then Russia also has to compete with the Japanese whose invasion of China would've been successful. It'd be like C&C Red Alert, but replace the Allies with Nazis and tone down the tech level a lot.
Also if Hitler's regime hadn't been put down when they were, they would've gotten hold of a nuclear bomb before any other country in the world knew about it, because everything the US and Russia knew about atomic weaponry they took from the Nazis proceeding the war. If Hitler got a hold of the Atom Bomb, it's game over for pretty much everyone who challenged them. Moscow would've been made a radioactive crater, and Communism would've fallen as well.

This is all, of course, assuming the two World Wars would've happened. Who knows how much the existence of America influenced history before World War I, so for all we know if Britain continued to control America, World War I would've never happened.
