Yes I know this sounds like a joke, or something from The Onion but this is a real story that has appeared on news sites and cable news. The U.S. navy has come out as said that Cap'n Crunch, the mascot for the cereal that bears his name, only has 3 stripes on his uniform, making him a commander, instead of the 4 stripes denoting a captain.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. navy had this to say:

“You are correct that Cap’n Crunch appears to be wearing the rank of a U.S. Navy commander,” Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Flaherty, U.S. Navy spokeswoman, told Foreign Policy. “Oddly, our personnel records do not show a ‘Cap’n Crunch’ who currently serves or has served in the Navy.”


On Twitter the Cap'n and his crew had this to say:

"So much fuss about my name. O, be some other name. What's in a name? That which we call Cap'n Crunch, by any other name would taste as sweet."


So is Cap'n Crunch a fraud? Or do you believe as I do that this entire thing was stupidity by most parties involved?

A commander in the U.S. Navy may command a frigate, destroyer, submarine, aviation squadron or small shore activity, or may serve on a staff (typically as executive officer) or as executive officer of a larger vessel. An officer in the rank of commander who commands a vessel may also be referred to as "captain" as a courtesy title, or informally referred to as "skipper".

A great many US service records were destroyed in a fire some decades ago, so it is possible that Captain Crunch's were among them.

It's the equivalent of the 5 star 'General of the Armies', the US doesn't use the term Field Marshall.
