RP brainstorming (Closed, att Atlantian, Telvira, Xiscapia)

Postby Dominanthia » Wed Jun 19, 2013 6:28 am

I have opened this topic as a place to have a brainstorming to shape our coming RP.

After giving it some though, I think that the RP should be built around those two central ideas:

* It has to be flexible in the core, allowing that each of us posts at its own rhythm, without that meaning that the story bogs downs. So, we have to avoid to use an structured, rigid story, favoring more a “sandbox” type structure were the stories for the RP will be of open nature, being improvised as we post. The aim of this is allow us to post as much or as many as we want, creating the stories as we go. If any particular story slows or dries off, any player involved can simply create a new one.

* But at the same time, it has to be evocative enough, giving plenty of story hooks to work with.

Having those two basic principles in mind, I think that the idea that atlantian dominions and me were toying with will work perfectly.

The idea is to have a remote, paradisiac planet, populated by primitive natives, that factions of our nations will discover, explore and colonize, similarly to many other “new continent/island/planet discovered” already existent in this forum.

I addition to that, we can use this forum to toss any story hook that we thing it could be interesting, involving our own nation or any of the other participants. Any player could adopt, modify or mix the ideas here to launch stories, the aim is to have a rich and evocative setting with plenty of exploration, intrigue, betrayal and damsels in distress.

What do you think of the idea?

I will begin with a few story hooks:

*The planet settles a small population of Helians that have escaped Dominanthian enslavement. The Dominanthians had known of their existence and had come to put those unruly Helians under the yoke.

*Dominanthians had come to the planet to record to shoot a TV contest. Aimed to the devious Dominanthian audience, the contest will feature two teams of slaves competing against each other.

*A corrupt Xiscapian or Telviran military officer is in league with the Dominanthians and plans to betray/eliminate a subordinate. He/she has supplied said subordinate and her unit with booby trapped “experimental weapons”, designed to turn against their wielders in the worst possible moment.

1) NSG Isn't an RP forum.
2) You can't "close" threads in NSG.

Xiscapia and me had discussed via telegram that we would like to move away from the military focus of this kind of colonizing RP´s, making other factions that ours nations´ military the one colonizing the planet.

Also, we need a catchy name for the planet. And a map of the continent/island were the action will take place would come handy too. Any volunteer to draw it?

I can't draw worth shit, so I volunteer not to draw it. :p

I can brainstorm a name for the world, though.

Here is the map procured to us by Xiscapia. Looks great!

Using any graphic editing sowfware, it will be easy to mark our advances in the planet, or any interesting features that we will need for our RP, like native settlements or mysterious structures lost in the middle of the jungle…

I´m not familiar with Xiscapian calendar, but for how long the plant has been being colonized by them? I think it would be better to keep the presence at the start (just a small outpost) and make it grow as the game progresses

The dates discovered and colonized are just for my own reference. For RPing purposes I'll be starting out roughly at the same time as everyone else, so as not to give anyone too big of an advantage starting off.

So the RP is mainly about competing colonization efforts? If so then I might fight on the side of the natives against the colonization, with Alexis and her crew as well as maybe some other suitable persons.

A mysterious planet being colonized by various factions is the frame for the RP to take place, but that doesn´t mean that the RP has to focus mainly in the colonization efforts. This being said, your idea offers plenty of possibilities. How do you envision the natives? Other than being primitive, nothing has been defined about them. What are Alexis´ motives to side with them?

Maybe we can mix this with my idea of the Helian settlement…. The Helians could have established as rulers of the nearby natives, being adored by them as goddesses. When the Dominanthians arrive to enslave the Helians in turn, that would create a situation where there are no truly “good” sides for Alexis to align them. What do you think?

Alexis as a citizen of the Empire is probably a bit of a believer in benevolent monarchy so depending on the nature of the Helians' rule she might simply side with them against the Dominanthians/Xiscapians/whoever.

That's certainly what it seems like, though I'm sure there will be subplots galore.

That brings up a point I've been wondering about. Who actually RPs/controls the natives? Is it you, Domi?

If Alexis and her crew were to really want to white-knight, it seems to me that they would take the side of the natives but perhaps somewhat distant from the Helians. I imagine the Dominanthians would probably like to enslave the natives too, thinking about it. It would be ironic if that happened, because then Alexis and her people would find themselves on the same side as the decidedly not white-knight Xiscapians. They hate slavery.

Given what we know about the Helians, I'm not so sure you could call their rule "benevolent" when they basically enslaved half their species.

I suppose I will have to be a shared effort, according to our story needs and the role the natives play on it.

I imagine the Dominanthians would probably like to enslave the natives too, thinking about it.

Dominanthians will be interested in enslaving only the native females. Their slavery is more a hobby for their twisted minds than a real economic necessity.

because then Alexis and her people would find themselves on the same side as the decidedly not white-knight Xiscapians.

What would make them not “white-knightly”? Eagerness to plunder the planet resources?

Given what we know about the Helians, I'm not so sure you could call their rule "benevolent" when they basically enslaved half their species.

Xiscapia has made the point :P . It would be Alexis´ task to discover and judge about the Helians “benevolentness.”

I do like the idea of having a different player RP tribal interactions for each of us.

We should probably decide what they look like, at least. I suppose whatever cultural details can come out during the RP, but things like physiology are rather important starting out. Do you think the natives are all one species, or more than one mixed together? What about technology? Are they basically Stone Age, or closer to Classical era, or what?

Well, yes. Remember that this is not the Kitsune Empire proper that they'll be dealing with; it's a corporation. Admittedly there will be officials from the government present to make sure that the company doesn't go crazy and try to strip-mine the planet and wipe out all life on its surface or something, but the corporate officers are still profit-minded so they've got an eye on exploiting resources and setting up shop on the planet, which entails things like disruption of the native wildlife, pollution and what can generously be called eyesores popping up everywhere as facilities are constructed. Not saying that the Xiscapians might not try to uplift the natives while they're at it, if only for labor purposes, but they certainly don't have their best interests at heart. It's the shareholders -and their own paychecks- that they're thinking about.

That's not even getting into the openly imperialist attitude they'll probably have. Native customs, rituals and ways of life? How amusingly quaint! And then of course there's the fact that they'll likely employ disproportionate retribution to any attacks. A thrown rock gets you a concussive blast that breaks both your legs from the mercenary patrol. A thrown spear gets an anti-personnel missile from the perimeter defense robo-turret that shreds you and all of your friends in a fifty-meter blast radius into giblets. A volley of arrows gets your village razed by a fleet of corporate gunships. And so on.

They're not evil, per se; they're just not traditionally "good guys" either.

Fair enough.

Oh, by the way, just so we have a place to keep it. Map.

My proposal is making them quite human-like in physiology, with a technology level similar to the Mayans or the Aztecs, but at the same time, the planet is dotted by ruins that suggest an highly advanced civilization. Explore the ruins or investigate the reasons behind the natives' tecnological downfal can be another story hook.
And what about the name of the specie “Paradisians” is good enough or we will need a different name?

That sounds fair enough. As for the name, I can't imagine what else they might be called, though they'll probably have a different name for themselves in their own language.
