Gotcha! The more you know, etc, etc. Shrimp, not prawn. I'll have to remember that.

Didn't know English football was taking after American football in their naming conventions now. What purpose does this serve, really, changing "Hull City" to "Hull Tigers"?

That sort of naming is pretty common in the Super League, isn't it? I had thought Hull was a big rugby town, so maybe that will make the change easier to stomach?

Technically it's Hull City FC to Hull City Tigers. Which is a little bit better, I guess.

Hull Tigers is the international brand.
Anyway, it's not like this is a big deal. They're just trying to build a brand for the club. And they're using "Tigers", which is the club nickname. I'd understand the outrage if they turned around and changed the club colours, or wanted to call them Hull City Eagles... but they're not doing anything like that. They're not pulling a Cardiff, ffs.
Alternate names aren't a new thing either. English clubs are often referred to by their nicknames (or partial forms) in the press both domestically and overseas. Notable examples are Man Utd being referred to as the Red Devils (mostly overseas though), Aston Villa are just "Villa" (no matter where you go, it seems), Tottenham are "Spurs". These brands are different. They stand out. How many other "Villas" are there? How many other clubs are known as "Spurs" ..? The Red Devil brand is linked directly to Man Utd. Hull are the first to really push this Tiger thing, it seems... maybe they're hoping it will have a similar effect. Hull Tigers would be more appealing to me as a randomer than Hull City AFC.
Seems like the complaints are mainly because it's different (seemingly most commonly defined as "American" or "Amateur", draw your own conclusions).

Allam wants to market the club as Hull City Tigers locally and Hull Tigers to national and international audiences.
Liventia wrote:I think it is a big deal — for their fans anyway — because they're dropping "AFC", which has been with the club since it was founded.
“We have dropped the AFC as it is something which has become redundant,” he said. “It is not used by the club, the fans never mention AFC, nor do the media. The identity of the club is the Tigers, the stripes, and the colour scheme of amber and black, which remains."
