Now, Nailed to the Perch is right in that this site used to be more diverse, in both demographic and in what could be discussed. But things changed, especially with the in-statement of the PG13 rule, which I think is a direct effect from NS being used as a tool to explain the nation-states concept in schools.

That's why I always remark that some topics discussed in TET, for example, should be taken to TG because a mod could (and it has happened) crack down hard on the posters for it. I don't think we had such a rule back in the Jolt days.

To me, Nationstates feels more like a war nowadays. You make a point, then you've got to set up the barricades and fight for your life against a barrage of strawmen and accusations that you're a terrible person. Whenever I dip into a debate thread nowadays I feel like I have to go in with an adversarial attitude. Is that an issue of the gender balance? I don't know, I notice it as much from female posters as male ones. Maybe it's a forum culture issue.

I think a long time ago, some canadian indigenous chick proposed a non-polemic non-advesarial discussion model. I remember it being very smart.

And I remember nobody really trying it.

It self-perpetuates I suppose. If you have a bad experience a few times, you tend to go in a bit more aggressive yourself. Certainly I've noticed I'm doing it recently, and I'm not very happy with myself for doing it. Snark cannons used to be reserved for extreme situations.

What DI mentioned, I think we all do it. I certainly do, because in my experience, NSG can be and is, more often than not, adversarial. I've been insulted enough times to know that you can exactly be meek. I wish it weren't that way, and that I could turn off my anger at times.

Yeah sometimes you can just get in a mood though.

I think I've found about a debate is that I can read through the thread, have an opinion, and end up being a fair bit more hostile to those that would be considered on the same side as mine, than my ideological enemies. It's more down to the manner and delivery of the poster rather than their message. And that might be what's changed over the years.

One time I was in Tijuana when a rata grabbed a phone out of the hands of a street whore and made a run for it. She removed her heels, held one in each hand and chased him down the street.

Free of the heels, she overtook him less than half a block. Realizing he was about to be tackled, he turned to menace her with his fists. She dove low and to the knees, hitting him with a viciously brutal crunch and knocking the wind out of him. As he went down, she employed her remaining momentum to roll up, and then descend upon him.

With her heels, which were still in her hands.

She wailed on that guy, screaming something like pendejo or pinchy or something and she swung and drove those heels into eyes, ribs, his neck, she was just too savage and fast for him to block every swing, and each hateful strike caused his whole body to curl into itself like a dying spider until the next strike elicited a new contortion. She beat the living shit out of that fucking guy.

The cops apparently didn't feel paid enough to care, they just watched. After a bit, her apparent pimp showed up and with an facial expression identical to a garbage man bored with his job, he picked her up and dragged her away. He put her back in her spot at the wall and gave her phone back to her, which he had picked up.

Then she went right back to texting on her phone like nothing happened.
