On the one-hand you might say that the government should except her as a citizen...which they rightfully should!Except it just so happens that if the government accepts her on a moral basis then any coward who does not want to protect this nation when called upon, can say they cannot fight for moral reasons.They are walking a very thin line.

The problem is not that they reject her for being a CO, the problem is that they would accept her if she were a CO for religious reasons. I personally do not see any reason to value religious moral reasons above non-religious ones.

How do you define a sect of a given cult/worship? They share some core beliefs, and have differences about some other aspects.

Even the fact that its expected that people are drafted in to the military to defend their country is outmoded to me, in addition to the fact that only being a member of an organised religion can get you out of it.

Bloody hell America, straighten your s*** out. I thought it was bad to be an Atheist in England (an officially Christian country!) but the fact that this lady's going to be denied citizenship because she has no structured-religion-based objection to fighting in a war has mandatory praying and hymn-singing in about 90% of schools beat. I mean, she's 64. By the time America is in a war that requires everyone to bear arms she'll be dead.

There cannot be exceptions. You can't have a double standard. That is by far worse than requiring an elderly lady to be called to military duty in the event she is absolutely needed. In all likelyhood, that case will never occur. But it still could happen. If she can't serve in combat, she can still pack parachutes, cook, nurse, any of those things.

Exactly what issue is the OP ignoring? It's stated clearly why she was denied citizenship, she has failed to present a religiously justified reason not to bear arms for the defense of the country, despite her declaration of not believing in God and not following any traditional religious beliefs.

I think the 'issue the OP is ignoring' is that it is the combination of her CO status and her atheism that has caused her citizenship application to be postponed (until/unless she gets the proper signed document), rather than her application being denied solely due to the fact she's atheist.

I realise that, thanks, but I find that a bit mad myself anyway. Really its the fact that its considered a vital enough issue to factor into someone's entry into the country.

Of course immigration's generally thought of with a different attitude in America than in the UK in many other senses.
