Hmm. So the reason why there was no housing shortage in 1939 - when London's population was at it's peak - but there is one now... is because family structures have changed, and extended families no longer live in one house?

Actually, if you really want to study why the demographics changed, you should research the New Towns - because you're looking at the uptick on a trend, and not understanding why the trend trended in the first place - the mass migration of (primarily working-class) Londoners OUT OF London two decades earlier.
