The Hobbit: What you thought of it and what you want next.

Postby Great Franconia and Verana » Tue Jun 11, 2013 9:56 pm

So back in December, the Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey came into theaters. I saw in Christmas Eve and it really blew me away. I have read the book hundreds of times, and while they changed a couple of major things, and added some new characters, I really enjoyed the film, and I can't wait until December, for the next installment. So what did you think of the first movie and what do you want to see in the next one? Personally, I am very excited for the Wood-Elves and King Thranduil, as elves are my favourite race, and I hope they are just as important in the movie as they were in the novel. I also want to see more of the Necromancer, and Radaghast. Sure, the rabbit sled was a bit silly, but I loved the character. What say you, NS?

I love all things Tolkein and would of course attend any sequel.

The movie was reasonably true to the book, I thought, with some added dramatization to the eagle rescue and the troll escape. And the wild ride through the goblin caves was thoroughly overdone, an obvious attempt to take advantage of 3D. It reminded me of that worst of Indiana Jones movies, Temple of Doom.

But it was too long, they just went on and on and on.

I agree, the movie was lengthy, but it was three hours of middle earth, so no complaints here. I saw some pictures of Thranduil and Bard, and both look just how I imagined they would. The only real complaint I have, one you pointed out,was the goblin escape was overdone.

They made Bilbo a bit too obviously heroic a bit too fast for me, especially in the goblin caves where I'd have preferred him to still be just sneaking around etc, with the dwarves coming round to respect him slowly, same in the trees bit. Having him do more traditionally heroic acts loses something imho.

I loved it, and I loved the way he merges other stories written by Tolkien into the Hobbit, not just following the Hobbit book, but taking elements from all other of Tolkien books (which will never have a movie of their own) and merge them into it, creating a much bigger frame. Because that's what is great in Tolkien, not one of his book, but the richness of the world he created in all his writings.

Didn't really like it too much, but it was fair for a first movie...

As stated, goblin cave escape was way too overdone...

And I just didn't get into Middle Earth this time...

That's just me...
And so it was, that I had never changed.

Pretty fun to watch, no shortage of action scenes, each of which add to the characters. I can understand why people didn't enjoy the long chase in the goblin underground It felt like it should have been either a bit more fleshed out or avoided entirely. But It's not bad in any respect, it could be better.

I thought the moth calling for the Griffons was a bit of a cheap way to evade certain annihilation and/or that part could have been expanded upon or built up a bit more.

No complaints about the rest of the film, I enjoy a bit of journeying into LoTR, fun songs throughout and good characters.

I mean i've only seen it twice so I'm not exactly going to be able to give a in-depth review of it or anything but I came away with the impression of time well spent and I can't wait for the next one.
I've always wanted to see more of the dwarves and some of their backstory.

I wasn't as inspired by the first Hobbit film as I was by any of Peter Jackson's LOTR films, but I hope that Peter Jackson is just getting warmed up.

Of course, it could be because LOTR was aimed at a higher age range, and therefore had great cathartic moments. I may need to remind myself that The Hobbit is more for little kids, just like the novel.

Anyway, aside from some quibbles, I did enjoy the first Hobbit film, nonetheless. I've seen the trailer for the next film, and it looks promising!

I'm hoping that the introduction of elves into the story will help to round the story out. It will be good to see Legolas again. It actually makes sense to include him in the film because he is the son of Thranduil, the Elven King of Mirkwood, of course. I wonder if there may be a little elven romance in the works. Could be fun!

Let me put it this way, when the music started playing and I heard Bilbos voice I was on the verge of tears. The Lord of the Rings series is one of the few series left that can provoke extreme emotional reactions in its watchers.

I am a massive LOTR fan and the hobbit was an amazing movie. It was a bit scetchy at times however it's was worth it's weight in gold

I would say more but I don't really know what else to say about one of 2012s best movies.

I found the trailer by accident while surfing YouTube and I nearly punched the computer in excitement. I am super excited, the trailer looks even better than last year's. Thranduil and the Wood elves will most definitely make the story alot more interesting.

I liked the Hobbit, both the film and the book (although i could not remember alot of it until i watched the film). I thought it was humorous, action packed and all round a good film. Didn't mind the Necromancer plot addition, thought it was interesting to see. Although i thought was a tad drawn out in the first half but quickened up in the second half.

Desolation of Smaug looks awesome, and we finally got to see him in the trailer, well his head at least which was pretty awesome. Probably be as good in my opinion.

*SPOILER WARNING*

The second film came out; The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. It was awesome, especially when Gandalf and Radagast went to Dol Guldur and Gandalf fought the Necromancer (Gold Bubble, Dark Cloud, Gold Bubble, Dark Cloud - wow, imagine if the tried to make a card game out of this). I want to find out how Gandalf gets hold of Radagast's staff later on...

Stretching The Hobbit into 3 movies was a mistake. The costumes and cinematography are beautiful, but it just moves way too slow and did not have enough plot in the 1st movie.

My parents offered to take me to a movie when I was visiting them for Christmas, but the 1st Hobbit movie was enough of a letdown, I wasn't that excited to see the 2nd and we ended up staying home instead.

After just two movies, I already feel like it's coming to this.

The first was great, the second was... okay. Hopefully the third will be less just plain silly than the second.

Ditto on the CGI orcs, though. Go back to guys with shittons of makeup, it looks way less cheesy than the CGI does.

I found Smaug's face design mildly annoying. I'm sure they picked it so he could have expressions, but it detracted from his overall majesty.

Have you seen the practical effects version they did of the big orc they exchanged for cgi? He was terrifyingly ugly. Especially compared to the half assed cgi they used in the sequel. I liked the first one but I still agree largely with CinemaSins take on it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LDhsH79jAY

I honestly felt like the second film crashed and burned spectacularly if looked at with even a modicum of scrutiny, and I seriously hope Jackson pulls it together for the last one.
