you shouldnt need grounds for divorce. and you don't in most states of the united states. not wanting to be married any more is enough.

You are right, but in the case of divorce, I believe it should negatively effect the settlement for you if you cheated.

I think with me it's the same with abortion; I'm OK with it, I just wouldn't want it happening to me. I didn't used to think that way, until it hit close to home.

Meh. Having been the victim of a cheating spouse, it really ain't that bad. Just gives you pretty much free rein to get your cheat on and not feel bad about it.

This smells very heavily of a research thread, which would be a no-no.

Always ask your partner permission, if it's no, and you do it anyway it's adultery.
It's not inherently wrong, as long as it's consesual.

If you are in a polyamorous relationship or are permitted to in that particular incident, then no, there is nothing wrong with it at all.If you are expected to remain monogamous, then yes, it is wrong. However, it would be a greater moral travesty to outlaw it.

Adultery is wrong, as it feels disloyal to your partner, and if there was a problem which made them turn to adultery, I would ask them to go to counselling but not force them, and if it still didn't work, leave the relationship entirely.

It's not a grey area - either a relationship works or doesn't, so I was taught [at least by the people I know].

This is not discussing the issue from a government perspective, only social mores and etiquettes perspective.

Outside of divorce proceedings, I can't see it being the government's business if people are cheating or not.

Here are two questions for you: is adultery fundamentally immoral and what consequences should there be for it, if any? In my opinion, adultery is wrong in most cases but it should not be a criminal offense. Instead, judges should consider the background behind the extramarital affair being dealt with. For example, did the other spouse have one as well? Did they do it because they were being abused? Was it an open marriage? The result should be more favorable to the victim of the marriage rather than the judge arbiting based on logistical factors.

What say you, NSG?

Yes it's wrong. But as long as something is consensual and between people who are mature enough to be able to understand the meaning of consent, then no law should forbid it.

I wouldn't make it punishable by law (but permit it to be an argument for divorce), but I can say that adultery is surely a quite ugly break of trust.

On some level.

Since marriage is indeed a contract under law, then adultery would logically be a breach of contract issue and should be legislated against.
But I view marriage as an antiquated ceremony of dubious relevance, so I'm actually opposed to legislation against it.

It's something three people should be able to work out as adults.
I put that in italics because of the absolute irony that many people really can't be adult about such an issue.

It is not "fundamentally immoral".

However, if one does decide to pledge their sexual/romantic loyalty to one person, then yes, it is at the very least jerkish to break that promise.
