I find somewhat weird that anyone living in a place with rather common access to advanced media such as newspapers, radio and TV has never heard of Nelson Mandela.

edit: we're talking of the same level of notoriety of, let's say, Karol Wojtyla, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Diego Maradona here.

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

He shouldn't have to explain Nelson's life to one person out of 3 million about one of the most politically well-known people on the planet Earth.

Nelson was a great man, the world will be a little more depressing without him, may him and his family move through this sad transition between life and death(if he dies).

The current status of the situation is that Nelson Mandela's health has not changed significantly: well-wishers continue to flock to Pretoria hospital in what I think is a great show of solidarity.

Obama is coming to South Africa shortly, I hope he gets to see Mandela because they have things in common is respect of the struggle for freedom and respect.

OMG stop supporting the genocide of the whites with your damn facts!

No, seriously: yep, there's a lot of anti-white racists in South Africa, just as there's a lot of anti-black racists there. With the small difference that whites aren't being forced to live in townships, kept in abysmal poverty, and subjected to continuous violent raids by black-only police forces.

I can't help it. The shiny new history degree on my wall compels me. It whispers to me in night.

He is one of the greatest figures and will be dearly missed when he dies (not saying he is going to soon, but as a realist, after 90 your countdown clock starts to approach zero really fast.)

Nelson Mandela. The man responsible for helping run South Africa into the ground. Of course, I do applaud him for ending apartheid but that was perhaps his only good deed. Despite my low opinion of him, I hope that he makes a recovery.

Today's highlight was Obama's visit to South Africa running in conjunction with the current situation.

While it is not my intention to go deep into the problems with America's foreign relations for the purpose of this thread, Obama did visit Mandela's family in private. US President Barack Obama praised Nelson Mandela as "an inspiration to the world", but not all South Africans saw Obama positively: there were protests which escalated into clashes with the police.

F.W. de Klerk will be returning to South Africa due to Mandela's poor health. I cannot confirm whether he is planning to visit Mandela.

In response to Hippo's question from another thread:

I certainly don't support the slaughter of innocents, but I believe that a lot of what you are calling "terrorism" is actually legitimate armed struggle against the oppressive apartheid regime.

I also find it hypocritical (Hippocritical?) that you justify massacres like My Lai which are basically massive collateral damage, but when the collateral damage is caused by actions against a regime you like, you suddenly find it horrifying.

Oh, and I see no connecting between Mandela and the Church Street bombing.

I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Basically, we all do what your saying. Very few people condemn violence and terrorism in all circumstances, whether you do depends entirely on your own point of view.

Exactly.

And since we are talking of Hippo anyways, under his reasoning the Boston Tea Party and other American indipendentists were terrorists due to their armed opposition against the British authority.
