Discussion Thread for Nelson Mandela's Health

Postby Charlotte Ryberg » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:37 pm

Previous thread titles: "Thinking of Nelson Mandela"

Summary of events:
  • 8 June: Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital with a serious lung infection. (Source: BBC)
  • 23 June: Jacob Zuma announced that Nelson Mandela was critically ill. (Source: BBC)
  • 29 June: Barack Obama visits South Africa. (Source: Al Jazeera and BBC)
  • 18 July: Nelson Mandela reaches 95th birthday with optimistic news from Zuma. (Source: BBC)
Nelson Mandela has been admitted to hospital for, as far as I know, the third time this year: I must come clear that am starting to worry for his health, given that it is a recurrence of a lung infection. I am hopeful that Nelson Mandela will recover, because he has done so much for freedom in South Africa, even though there are noticeable problems in the country right now, but regrettably the reality of his health in sinking in.

Important: With permission from NERVUN, Moderators set out some requirements for discussion of a death of a major figure such as Margaret Thatcher: in this case, Nelson Mandela is a transforming figure that cannot be ignored:

  1. While his health is in a critical condition, that doesn't mean that we can't have a discussion about his life and impact on society. Moderators ask participants to avoid posting along the lines of "Show some respect!".
  2. While some people dislike him, gloating over his health, particularly with posts along the lines of "Ding dong the witch is dying", will be considered trolling.
  3. While some people like him, getting angry over people who disagree with you, particularly with posts along the lines of "You idiots don't realize how great he was!", will also be considered trolling.
I should also add that while social media is great for breaking news, any significant changes to his health should be checked from a solid news source such as Al Jazeera or the BBC, or a solid press agency such as Reuters or the Press Association. Verified significant changes to his health will appear on the opening post as well.

As always, debate, discuss, have fun, but don't attack others or gloat. Moderators will be watching this thread.

I will keep NSGers up to date as the situation develops, this OP and its title may change if the situation changes - for now though, reflections on his influence and endeavour?

Well, he's gotta go sometime doesn't he? It's not like he's not had a good innings and I doubt there's anything more he could do for SA at this point in this health.

I've been reluctant to come out here and admit that I have been preparing for the day when Mandela finally passes away for the fear of causing offence, but now you said it...

Personally it would be nice to see him live forever, but alas we don't have the technology for that.

He's done some good stuff, and I respect him for that, but no one lives forever.

"some"

fucking huge understatement right there, mate.

But yeah. Basically, you're right.

Still, when Mandela passes away, the world will be much poorer for it.

Mandela is a great and brave man.

I was a bit too young to really participate in the struggle for his liberation, and my eldest brothers and my parents did. The day he was elected president, we all went to celebrate in the streets of Paris, proud to have been some of the droplets that, all together, tore down the Apartheid regime.

South Africa maybe (although it's still turning into shit even if he is still clinging to live like Zuma clings to power) but I don't think his death will mean anything other than a statesman dying.

It will be sad when he dies, but at least he will die knowing that he has lived a great life and has done a huge amount of good. Most people don't have that when they die.

As their last acts on this Earth, Prince Phillip and Mandela should bare knuckle box for the people's amusement.

UPDATE: The BBC was told by Mac Maharaj (presidential spokesman) that he was receiving expert medical care, indicating how important Nelson is, but it is not wise to ignore the problems that South Africa face today - if he could run a country again he would really take it seriously because he wanted everyone out of poverty... everyone. So a very inspirational person.

South Africa already has a ton of problems. As great as Mandela is, I don't think his death can do much more harm than already exists.

Somehow I think the spectacle will be rather taken away from when all the spectators realise that each has a force on their punch of about 0.00000000000001 pounds per square inch.

12 rounds of fighting ending in the removal of 8 of Mandela's cheek cells and 10 of Philip's isn't gonna pull the crowds in. :p

It'll be a shame when he goes, though.

Don't be deceived when our Revolution has finally been stamped out and they tell you things are better now even if there's no poverty to see, because the poverty's been hidden...even if you ever got more wages and could afford to buy more of these new and useless goods which these new industries foist on you, and even if it seems to you that "you never had so much" - that is only the slogan of those who have much more than you.

I had the fantastic honor of meeting him about 3 separate times within the course of my job, and each time I was impressed as to his determination, his charisma and his kindness.
God bless.

Well, everyone dies, even the great leaders of freedom, after all, it's not like MLK Jr. is alive and kicking...

But I still hope that he lives for a little while longer, and once he dies, it is a peaceful death. He is a great man.

He didn't hold on to power for years like other post colonial African leaders. For that alone he has my respect.

While I recognise the fact that he contributed to the fall of Apartheid, I don't particularly like Nelson Mandela as a person due to the fact that he essentially founded the military wing of the ANC.

It's still a little unnecessary.
