I'm not sure what the law on child support is where DM lives, but if there are awards then "we had a verbal agreement that she'd abort or raise it herself" won't get him off. Even a written contract probably won't.

But does that matter? Even where there is compulsory child support awarded to custodial parents, quite often the custodial and non-custodial parents reach a mutual agreement and no government enforcement is required. DM seems like a nice sort who would help if needed.

Yeah, that's a possibility. There's a degree of trust you have to have. And, thanks. I am a nice sort and push comes to shove, I wouldn't leave anyone I cared about in a bad way.

Fetuses do not get the right to own a woman's body. If my mother had wanted to, she had every right to abort me. In fact, it probably would have been wiser to do so. But instead she made the CHOICE to give birth, which is her right. It is also any woman's right to not choose to give birth.

Just a side note, I always found that a bit odd. The suspicion towards effectiveness of vasectomy. I do know there are stories of vasectomy (using ties) that spontaneously undid and a pregnancy happened, but when a vasectomy is done correctly, I don't see that happening very often enough to be a big concern.

She absolutely is.

Ignored the rest of the post that explains exactly why she isn't I see.

There are drop-off centres, for one, for another she can place the child into adoption.
Being fair is precisely the point.

Seeing as the mother has the choice of being a parent or not at practically any time and can opt-out at any time, the father must have the same right.
The mother can, on a whim, refuse to divulge the identity of the father once the child is born, and in a few cases, he is unable to obtain a paternity test without her consent.
Extending the power to refuse parenthood from the mother to the father is essential.

The fathers "Responsibilities" under the current system extend only as far as the mother wants, regardless of what he wants.
Ranging from "You do not have a kid" to
"Give me money for the kid you didn't want."

To go even further, if it were the rights of the child being contended then refusing to divulge the identity of the father would be against the law.
Children do not have rights to both parents, nor to the support of both parents, unless the woman demands it or in a few extreme cases where the father obtains custody and subsequently demands it. Though in such cases the mother is usually in such a state that custody payments are not going to happen etc.

I can think of absolutely no reason that someone should be compelled to take care of a child against their will.
It is not the right of the child, else adoption would be illegal, etc.
In the current system it is the whim of the custody holder that can compel the other into essentially servitude. The custody holder is in most cases the female.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Yah. Mine was free, but they put me through extra rounds of counselling because I was a lot younger than the typical customer, and childless.

I did ruminate a long time on whether I might change my mind in future. Sperm-banking occurred to me, but I was told it would cost me money to reserve my own sperm for later use so I didn't. Smarter move would have been to donate to the general bank, in case it was still there if I wanted it later.

I haven't changed my mind, and at 48 the possibility is growing more and more remote.

I used to have a huge beef about that. It is such a put down on part of parents, but now that I know what I know, I know better, and these days, I happily bow down.

Um. Telling them doesn't reverse the procedure. If she gets pregnant she's still sleeping around. Telling them is a GOOD thing. I mean if I got into a relationship with someone and they never told me they had a vasectomy I would probably murder them. I want kids and I don't want to waste my time with someone who doesn't want that, too. And lying on top of that, ugh.

Being infertile is something I think a partner deserves to know before things get too serious (like, stable relationship serious not just sex). As long as you're clear that both of you are just in it for fun, I meh.

Chicks that wanna get pregnant are THE BEST... they hound dog you all the time and they really get into it. Nothing motivates a chick to hump like a wildebeast like visions of little baby booties!
