What often happens is that people, instead of replying to your argument, use some condescending witticisms and don't actually say anything aside from what only boils down to "I think your argument is stupid", albeit in a more eloquent package.

NSG is far from what I'd dare call a debate forum and more of a place to dump your opinions with some occasional debate.

Really, sometimes it's all about who can act the toughest, coolest and say the most witty things to make the e-peen rise above all others.

my biggest beef is the republican bashing on this site, i am tired of beikng called racist exist, homophobikc because of my poliical views. now to be fair my right wing friends are guilty of this as well, it is just on this site, with its liberal bias (most of the folks here are on the left, and there is nothing wrong with that in and of itself), but it does make the bashing come out that way.

it has gotten past the point where i dont go into certain threads, not because i dont disagree with the premise, but i dont want to deal with the dog pile mentality.

Demonstrating how someone's argument is fallacious is half the fun of debating.

I mean, if you can't feel superior on the internet, where can you? Personally, I find forums that do have a more intellectual and reasoned base tend to be full of pretentious elitists and cliques. Not my cup of tea, personally. Diversity is what makes forums interesting, If you picked out all the bits you didn't like, you'd lose something from the whole. A forum's dynamic is a bit like a personality in the respect that experiences govern its behaviour. I've known some pretty nasty places filled with supposedly "enlightened" individuals.

The most common issue I see is people mistaking discussing the implications of their stance with "strawman."

Or flinging out "strawman!" or "troll!" or "poe!" etc. just to dismiss the other side's argument.

Or "edgy" or "hipster".

I'm really sick of people dismissing perfectly valid arguments with "you're just a hipster" or "hurr durr edgy". Seriously, that should be reserved for when someone says something like "X is bad because it's mainstream".
It's been getting worse; lately I've been seeing sensible, well-written posts simply dismissed as "hipster" for such edgy hipster opinions as advocating education reform.

I tend to view NSG as a rowdy pub I sometimes pop into, a bunch of banter, some loud pontificating, a corner here or there with some serious debate.. occasionally a fight breaks out..

So I don't mind all the rubbish, as long as the more serious fighting is dealt with then I'm happy to pop in for a pint and chatter.

It's just not the forum for precise debate.

But I agree, in the years I've been here, I don't think I've asked "source?" once. It's intellectually lazy, and fundamentally indicative that the other person doesn't have the capacity to engage in an actual conversation on their own two feet.
