The United States of America was essentially founded by Christianity. Most of the colonists who went to America where Protestant Christians. And whiles the U.S constitution was based on some basic principles of Christianity, the USA was NOT founded ON Christianity. It WAS however, founded BY Christians, and can thank its very existence to Christianity.

The typical theist fallacy is to say "Stalin was atheist, therefore atheism is evil", whilst neglecting the fact that Stalin didn't commit democide because he was an atheist, is was because he was incredibly paranoid and desired, as you said, absolute control.

On the other hand, events such as the Albigensian Crusade were performed entirely for religious reasons.
