Tolkien is a shit writer. He may have made an interesting world, but his books are written with the utmost incompetence. The fact that he spends pages and pages describing inconsequential details should be proof enough of that. There's a reason why his contemporaries laughed at him and why even his friends didn't like the books.

Notably, Tolkien didn't really care too much about the story or plot- he just wanted a place to put his languages.

And it's certainly no surprise that the languages in LotR are the best part.
