Yes and I have had my stances changed on a few things.

Knowledge is a rather remarkable thing and there are some rather smart people here.

We Generalites are a stubborn brood. And NSG is where we bash heads and debate. But have you ever actually changed someone's opinion here?

Because it often seems futile with all this debating that we do when the person at the end just stubbornly says "Ok, well that's your opinion but you'll never convince me", and it makes NSG seem a bit sad and more like mutual ego-stroking than genuine debate sometimes...a lot of heat but no light.

I think I've convinced about five people through NSG and telegram that I know of, the most major of which was from theist to atheist, and from socialist to capitalist in one fell swoop. But I've also had a multitude of run ins with ideological brick-walls.

What about you NSG? Have your oratorical skills ever been rewarded with you convincing someone to change their mind? Has that irritating nemesis of yours who was just plain wrong been converted by you (or vice versa)? Or is every debate for you here just an irritating insight into how entrenched people can be?

We are all here in NSG debates, in one way or another, to convince people of something, my guess is that it doesn't happen all too often, which in its own way is sad but it wouldn't be fun I guess if the opposite were true and this was just a facile exercise. So who's mind have you changed? Who changed your mind? And on what topic?

There's a lot of lurkers here. I'm not here to convince the people I'm debating with. I'm here to convince lurkers. So whether or not they're convinced I wouldn't know.

NS must have lotts of influence on you. :)

It's helped me mature as a person, probably because of the environment on here (serious political/philosophical discussion). With the increase in maturity I've changed my views, as my perspectives of the world changed. NS has been an experience that's aided my growth.

Well, I think NS has ever so slightly shifted my views. Although so subtly nobody would notice, and so subtly I'm not even sure it's not just RL. It's quite hard to achieve a complete turnaround in anybody's opinions.

Nope, but I have been influenced by other NSers, such as I was once capitalist anti-gay conservative freak (I was once upon a time), but now because of NS I've changed to the complete opposite, which is a good thing in my opinion.

It's probably happened. I know for sure that I get some education on NS, and NS has the tendency to make people more left in general...

I am actually the one who gets their mind changed because I listen to other people's opinions and evaluate. Most of them, I don't respond back saying "Yes, I think you're right now" because due to the nature of NSG, saying that makes the whole atmosphere a bit awkward.

But no, I never really changed anyone's mind on NSG.

It isn't for me either. Books and such are also my primary source for building my intelligence. It's the life experience I've gained from being on here (because you're dealing with real people) that I'm talking about. When I first came on here I was fairly intelligent, but immature. Dealing with the...harshness, for lack of a better term, of NS helped me mature, which has helped me expand my intellectual abilities.
