If circumstances were different would you like the Philippines to be the 51st U.S. state?

The Philippines: The 51st U.S. State... I mean 49th State!

Postby The Islands of Metanoia » Tue May 28, 2013 5:45 am

Ok this is a serious discussion. Only minorly related to this thread.

Back in 1930s. During the American occupation of the Philippines...

Image

The Philippines' El Partido Liberal Progresista (Under Pedro Paterno) the Liberal party Progressive Party, once had a fight with the Nationalista party over making the Philippines into the 51st 49th U.S. state. The Liberal Progresista Party submitted plans to the American congress to have the Philippines incorporated as the 51st 49th American state but issues over adding another star to the flag, the influx of cheap labor and commercial interests opposed to the cheap Abaca, Sugar and Textiles that would flood American markets (therefore destroying domestic textile production) had made several interest groups turn down the Philippine Liberal Progresista party's proposal to unionize the Philippines into the 51st 49th state of America.

Furthermore, the win of the Nationalista party in the elections using the platform of full independence from America, crushed any attempt by the Liberal Progresista Party to make the Philippines the 51st 49th U.S. state.

The question I now ask is: what if? What if the American congress approved of the plans to make the Philippines the 51st 49th U.S. state? As American citizens what would be your reaction to this? As Filipino citizens, how about your reaction? As British citizens, what do you think over the chances of the Philippines becoming a U.S. state eclipses yours 3 to 1. :p

Also: don't turn this into a flame-war where people hurl mud at each other. This is a serious discussion. Thank You.

I would support the Nationalists on that one, since it was a good move for the Phillipines. After all, they spared themselves the worst of American domination, at the low low price, of Marcos, a puppet of the USA.

Also, you meant 49th state. :p

WTH? You mean that during that time, we applied to be the 49th state not the 51st? :? I am once again surprised with Philippine History.

As an American, I'd be cool with The Phillipines joining us.

I do agree with the Nationalist Party's historic decision to pursue full independence though, the US treated them like crap back then.

It would be a bit hard to apply to be the 51st state before there was a 49th and 50th state.

I'd rather have it we have the status of Puerto Rico. A separate country but under one constitution with the U.S.

I'm not updating my poll. It would remove all the progress. So it stays there as a rad testament to my graceful ignorance.

You stand at the pinnacle of honesty. The Philippines as a US state? Why not, it might shut up China for a while.

The government and population is nominally pretty Catholic. On the other hand, the kind of people who talk up how moral they are tend to be massive hypocrites, just like everywhere in the entire world. So eh.

I doubt it, personally. A majority Catholic with a Muslim minority, somewhat tolerant of homosexuals to a degree. The city folk are pro-capitalism, the countryside are more pro-regulation. I would doubt it being a red state, maybe a swing state though.
