The military, in any news article, has to maintain face. Anything you say, as military personnel, can and will be taken out of context. You can't trust what any military person says to a reporter, because it's probably doctored, because we know that anything we say that isn't 100% politically correct will be slandered terribly.

Yes, degrading people is generally considered unacceptable. If those sergeants were directly inferring to the recruits as homosexuals in a very degrading manner, I'd consider that something that should be included in the initial Drill Instructor training as being a no-go.
But add a shred of context to the situation, and you'll find that the vast majority of the time that the Drill Instructors are using it because it is an insult and nothing more. Because it does make -anyone- feel bad, not because it singles out any one individual.
