My guess about the homophobia is that some people who like to think of themselves as "pure heterosexual" are scared of their own latent non-heterosexuality.

And now for the necessary part of the text where I address the self-righteous people who think I'm self loathing. I'm not. Really, I'm not. I have sex with men and I enjoy it. I love being me and I wouldn't be anyone else for all the money in the world. Nobody thinks the way I do and I cherish that. Not self loathing. What I do loath is the fact that I get written off because of the behavior of a tiny little sliver of gay men. And while society shouldn't stereotype based on the actions of a few it's a little different for gay guys because you may not "know" that someone is gay so all the gays who just act like normal goddamn people are overlooked. So nobody, really, is to blame except for those very very few gays who give the rest of us a bad name. And I really wouldn't take much issue with Pride Parades if they didn't almost universally devolve into colorful feathers/sex festivals.

I feel you, bro. I'm straight myself, but I have more gay friends than straight - which I attribute to my very odd female BFF...anyway. Those gay friends are male, and totally nondescript, run-of-the-mill average Joes. If you didn't have a good gaydar, you'd never tell. I'm sorry, but it's sickening that they depict suicide. Yes, the whole bullying thing is a huge and horrible issue, but further emotionalizing an already emotionally charged issue isn't going to do any good. It just pushes reasonable, logical discussion further into the future. And depicting blood and violence to guilt people into agreeing with you is fucking shameless. It's as bad as an ad for an animal shelter that depicts animal abuse occurring or an anti-abortion ad that shows half-formed fetuses. It's reactionary bullcrap that will lead to even more reactionary bullcrap. The problem with bullying of gays is not a problem with gays. It's a problem with bullying and how we raise our children.

Our society raises our children in the most homogenous way possible so that, when they encounter a different kid, they behave like fucking chickens that peck chickens with deformities to death. And the way we tried to respond was to teach our children not to acknowledge differences which was totally wrongheaded and really just exacerbated the problem. We tell our little kids that the differences they think they perceive really AREN'T differences at all so that when they're in middle school and high school and it becomes UNDENIABLE that these differences exist they haven't a goddamn clue how to deal with them. We need to teach them to recognize differences and, not "appreciate" them as that implies special treatment; further ostracizing "different" children, but to understand and accept them. Denying that a faucet has a leak will not make your plumbing any better.

Then the children grow up and realize, like their parents do now, that bullying is horrible. And they try to solve it the same way their parents tried.
