Social conformity. I've theorized that almost all of our social problems arise from our atavistic small group australopithecene instincts. You're in a group of 20 hominids, you need to make sure everyone's on the same page. Anyone sticking out can be a sign of illness, weakness, or lack of commitment to the group, any of which can invite predators or other groups into killing you off. It's not enough to have a monolithic status quo, that's too easy to match, so the group has to also take some twists and turns to make sure everyone follows along at the same time. I think this, along with the tendency to boredom and mental stagnation, leads to styles, trends, and the notion of "fashion." A group understanding the need to procreate peaceably, without jealousy, also explains the tendency to not only monogamy but heterosexuality.

Our minds are structured to become used to seeing certain things and object to difference, except when it is initiated communally or from a dominant group leader, in which it becomes the new "same." In our current age it's just the ability to intellectually understand when not to follow our instincts and follow a modern rational comprehension of what a society can be. Unfortunately, even the acceptance of homosexuality is often done on a collective basis, rather than individually working out the logic, but it's progress of a kind.

I believe that it is very disturbing the amount of people who speak of homosexuals as if they are demons hiding under your bed about to rape you if you get near them. We need to think of the truth of homosexuals or bisexuals for the matter. They may like same sex and are different from other people, but why do people avoid gays?
