A Florida high school senior is facing two years of house arrest, probation and a lifetime as a registered sex offender after engaging in a same-sex relationship with another student.

Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, a senior at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Fla., has been charged with two felony counts of “lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 – 16 years of age” stemming from her sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, according to arrest records.

“She had a mutual consenting relationship with her girlfriend who is three years younger, and her parents had her arrested,” according to Kaitlyn’s mother, Kelley Hunt Smith. According to Smith, the two girls started dating when her daughter was 17. Hunt turned 18 on August 14, 2012.

“This is about two teenage high school girls who were dating, and both consenting,” Smith told LGBTQ Nation on Saturday. “They are out to destroy my daughter, because they feel like she ‘made’ their daughter gay.”

Douchebag vindictive homophobic parents + broken laws governing consent = another young person's life ruined.

Good.

Equality is happening.

Females are being charged for sex crimes.

And that's yet another reason why the zero tolerance statutory rape laws are idiotic.

She had sex with someone below the age of consent and is getting in trouble for it. Remind me what the problem is?

There may be an element of homophobia there alright.

She was underage however, we do not make exceptions to laws.

Person breaking the law and people reporting them for it.

People reporting said person are assholes, for following the law?

I respect the LGBT community and believe they should be treated equally, meaning that if they break a law, they get punished for it.

The problem is that a good sliding-scale system wasn't in place so two teenagers in high school together couldn't have a sexual relationship.

Because they were lesbians, we have to feel sorry for them.

I swear, replace this with a heterosexual couple and people would be screaming for the man to be sent to the gallows

Good. The 18 year old needs to go find an adult to have a relationship with, not a minor.

Florida

The age of consent in Florida is 18, but close in age exemptions exist. By law, the exception permits a person 23 years of age or younger to engage in legal sexual activity with a minor aged 16 or 17.

794.05 Unlawful sexual activity with certain minors.-- (1) A person 24 years of age or older who engages in sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. As used in this section, "sexual activity" means oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another; however, sexual activity does not include an act done for a bona fide medical purpose Florida code, Title XLVI, Chapter 794

Regardless if it was same-sex or not, it was still illegal Image

No, because sliding-scale laws are better and protect teenagers better. Assuming that people are biased against straight people is a nice touch on the shit souffle that is that post though. Actually, it's the entire shit souffle.

This is why you should have interns :P

That way you could be illegally bombing another country, and lying about it, while illegally bombing another intern, and lying about it, at the same time! It's an 11 on the Clinton Satisfaction Scale! :P

Indeed, however the law is the law. It was broken whether or not the current code is fair or not and so the sentence must be served.

Is there much support for this sliding scale system.

It reminds me of the two teens making out in Wisconsin, and the parents turned in each others' kids for statutory rape because they were both under age and consent did not matter under state law, and the DA went ahead and prosecuted them!

These sex offender laws need serious revision.

We get all up in arms because of poor little victims like Amber, and then pass harsh laws that punish all kinds of innocent people.

Hardly. It wouldn't make news, but most people would say there's nothing wrong with two high schoolers dating.
