I don't think it's a matter of race, just where you live/grow up. If, like me, you grew up in suburban New Jersey, where getting necessities are never an issue, where you can see the beach from your window, and where you can take an hour stroll without worrying about your safety, you'll probably be a little different from someone who grew up in Camden, where violence is an issue at all times, food might not be a guarantee, and life isn't such a breeze.

You should keep in mind that society as a whole bought into the aforementioned social construct. This means that racial categorizations were and are relevant today. Despite this, we ought to be hopeful. It seems as though the social construct is becoming less and less salient as time passes. Sixty years ago, it was employed to ensure that certain people would not have access to social institutions. Forty years ago, racial differences kept otherwise happy couples from marrying one another - mostly through social penalties. Today, we're challenging the very relevance of race as a means of categorizing people. Tomorrow perhaps, people will cease to employ race as an essential characteristic in developing their own identities. Progress is being made, but we shouldn't permit our own desires and assumptions speak for all of society. Race is still very much alive.
