Even if the govt. of China decides to lay claim it will be to use as a bargaining chip over the Senkaku Islands. Japan gives up its claim on the Senkaku Islands, China gives up its claim on Okinawa.

The logic used to "attempt" to justify a Chinese claim over Okinawa is ridiculous. With that in mind, even if it were a solid, logical argument being presented I still wouldn't support transferring sovereignty in Okinawa from Japan to anyone but the Okinawan people themselves, it's their island if it's not Japanese.

I know. A cursory analysis of the demographic data indicates that in 2005 40.6% of Okinawans over 18 identified exclusively as such, with 21.3% identifying as Japanese and 36.5% identifying as both. So these nationalists seem to constitute a plurality, not a majority. Combining those who identify as either Japanese or Japanese/Okinawan, the nationalists are actually a minority.

The matter of separation was analyzed too, with those supporting separation from Japan with or without permission constituting a clear minority. 58.7% said that Okinawa should not separate if given permission to do so, and 57.4% said Okinawa should not separate if refused permission to do so.

Have these numbers shifted dramatically since then? That data is just about a decade old, and newer data is proving stubborn.
