I make $8.50 an hour working about 35 hours a week at a supermarket.

My net worth is around $15,000. I've got about $2,400 in credit card debt, and my mom gives me $700 a month in support plus whatever i need should troubles arise. All things considered, I make about $1,500 a month, and in a year, I come out with something like $16,000. It's not much, but I've lived on far less for many years, so I get by reasonably well. I'm unfortunately not in college yet, but I will be shortly.

I have great expectations for a few years down the road, of course. But today, I'm hardly well to do.

Lower middle class, my father's worked at Land Rover for over 25 years and my mother, before she had me, was an optical assistant. No blood, as far as I can tell, outside England and Ireland.

I think that it is ultimately not initial class that determines our potential, but the morals and values instilled in us by our parents. My parents, working class themselves, have moved up and put me in a very good place through middle-class values. However a rich man with no sense and typically benefit-class values will slide downwards.

The job you work + the amount of wealth you have defines your class. There is a line, but it tends to be a bit blurry.

So does one's family and their wealth, because you can presumably take part in it. Since you are 12 and going to school you have to live off your parents. You could get a job, but at least here in Sweden it is a complete waste of time getting a job before you are 18, because you will then often earn ~50% less than a legal adult (18+). I'm not sure if that's the case in the U.S., though.

Depends on the place ($1 a day can go pretty far in a lot of the world. In New York ... not so much), but $50,000 should be well more than sufficient for any place for one person to go on.

Indeed. If you had 50$K a year in India, you could have a full-time maid. People can get milk for the equivalent of about 7 cents US or so, and a full healthy meal for about a buck or less. It all depends on where you are.

Of which Richmond do you speak? I live near a Richmond, but it's just a giant suburb with an airport and a whole hellava lot of people who speak only Chinese. It's not particularly cheap, either.

In America you can have high school dropout plumbers who earn up into six figures a year.

So by economic class they're middle, but by education they're low.

And thereby hangs the state of the union.

As for me, I have two graduate degrees, and my wife makes a good living.

So my class is "academic gigolo".

because the more wealth you have the more healthy you will be, This can be evidenced by plenty of research but some basic ideas are...
They visit their GP more often, because they aren't intimidated by them.
They are more likely to understand the medical jargon used by health professionals.
They have in most cases a higher standard of education, thus better knowledge of how to avoid illnesses and such.
Can afford the more expensive treatments for whatever illness may ail them.

Course you can get poor upper class people, i know it's fairly biased against the rich, but well what do you expect from researchers who will be middle class at the wealthiest?
