Seriously half the world lives on less than $2 a day.

If you live in the bay area or new york and think you are poor because you "just" make 40k per year or so... you should realize that you are probably making 3 times as much as a large number of other people who live in your city some of whom probably have much more education than you.

What is minimum wage in your town? Allot of people really do make that and they manage to survive on it. And some consider themselves lucky to be making 20k per year.

The real world is not the one you see with your wealth colored glasses.

If you make more than 70k and you live anywhere in the world you are rich.

Wealth is relative. I could not exist in Boston on $2 a day. That would only get me maybe 2 packs of ramen. Add in basic things like shelter and even minimal clothing in winter, and there you have it.

So yes, people do realize that making "just" 40k a year is quite a lot compared to say, someone living in Zimbabwe or Ghana or Mali.

Compare two teachers...one in Boston, one in rural West Virginia. Both are making $60k a year, plus benefits. Who is wealthier?

Answer is the one in rural West Virginia because they have higher spending power.

To claim that wealth is solely a function of income is asinine. We all realize that, compared to much of the world, we are very well off. And yet, some can barely exist in the areas that we live on the salaries we make, even if it is hundreds of times more than what others make in different countries.
