Define your class.

Postby Pevisopolis » Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:16 pm

What, I ask you, defines particular social classes in modern society? Thsi arose from a discussion over in F7 about whether "Lower Middle Class" would be, say, a comfortably living, although low-level worker, or a doctor, lawyer, etc.

So, what are the terms that define which class a person is in? Where do you draw the line between Working, Middle, and Ruling? Is there a line? Et Cetera.
Jesus God almighty man, look at that lot over there! They've spotted us!

Lower upper class.
Rich, historically integrated into my country and have no blood outside Germany, England and Ireland.

I hate my heritage, wealth and country, so I give most of what I can away.

I don't really know where to draw the line, and never tried.

My family and I are of the proletariat.

This is actually a whole field in sociology. The definitions depend on the culture. There are very many different class and cast systems. The currently most popular model of measuring class is not by wealth but by how the community views the job title.

Surveys go out and they find out how people rank the different job titles by class. Within a given culture almost everyone will rank the title in the same way having little to do with income.

You can also think of class in a Marxist way which may be more useful for some things... ;)

"bloodlines" are retarded, but I'm an American, so thats to be expected.

I grew up solidly middle class, I think. Both my parents have college degrees, my dad was an accountant. We live din a nice neighborhood and had a nice house.

Right now I'm a graduate student, which I guess is in transition form middle class to upper middle class?

I am a wizard.

I have cross classed sometimes, like Wizard/Fighter, which was interesting, but mainly, my class is Wizard.

And I have prejudices against other classes, like priests, paladins and specially sorcerers.

I agree about this, a lot of skilled laborers are put into the lower class, despite making considerably more than people who would be considered middle class.

their job obviously

middle class = not in the coal mines and such

with that in mind lower middle class (at least in the UK) is low level office work

Pevisopolis wrote:So, what are the terms that define which class a person is in? Where do you draw the line between Working, Middle, and Ruling? Is there a line? Et Cetera.

1) their job nothing more
2) ruling class doesn't exist you godless communist but again its the labour involved with the upper class being big wigs and an increasingly bankrupt aristocracy
3) not really a line but upper class children will have it easier

Well, I don't consider them to be upper class by virtue of their birth. If later on in life they were working at a 7-11, then I'd still say they're working class.

Which one? I mean there's Geometry and Algebra. Fun stuff there... Of there's Geography class; that's mildly interesting. English is always entertaining, lot's of writing and such. Science? Well we make stuff go boom! Oh and Spanish is rather drab but sometimes we read an interesting book.

Only if you know nothing of the marxist way of separating classes of people. You don't need to be a communist to agree with his separations. Actually I don't agree with all of them either. He had this one class of people: I forgot what they are called. But it basically meant worthless non working people who live on crime. the underclass ;)

Your choice of model will depend on if you want to measure an individuals function in the economy or if you want to measure an individuals function in society or some mix.
