China, India, Indonesia, Japan, North and South Korea, will be the most powerful nations by 2050, judging by current trends.

America as a world power isn't going anywhere for a plethora of reasons.

I have only read through about a quarter of all the posts so far, but it appears that many are forgetting about India. India may not seem like a likely contender for dominance, but they do have a very ancient warrior tradition, they take their military very seriously and have made considerable gains in technology in the last few decades. It's not enough to contend with current technologies such as the famed American M1A1 or the beloved, yet possibly weak, Russian T-90, but it could be a precursor to more powerful vehicles.

It looks like their is no shortage of American haters from what I've seen so far, but they cannot deny that America is currently the most powerful (and in some ways the only) world superpower. If based on might alone, this would potentially continue for many years, well past 2050. But the only significant threat to American power is inside itself. Debt. It's a major problem. I'm not talking so much about what we ow China and all of our other various funds-supporters, but rather the debt that will be incurred by 2050. The main contributors to this are Medicare, Obama-care, and other welfare programs. Now I'm not saying that these are all horrible plans that we have to cut, but rather just pointing-out that they are the main contributors to our debt (15% of the American budget is used on the military, a majority of the rest is spent on welfare programs), the most-likely cause of the potential failure of the American way of life. Please remember that there are plenty of other threads to talk about what should be done on this issue, here is not the place.

We all know that China is definitely a contender for a world superpower, especially by 2050, but many seem to forget that China is facing a problem similar to America's. China's government is currently employing its construction worker to make empty cities in order to prevent the workers from having no jobs. If they don't have their jobs, it would be the unraveling of their economy, an event that they know is coming and cannot avoid. Chinese officials have been debating starting up a war in order to push-off their impending recession. That could explain why they've taken hostile stances to so many nearby nations - Japan, India, Indonesia, and others. If you think about it, there is no power that China would want to avoid fighting other than the US since it has a larger, technologically-superior military and, more importantly, a war with them would cause all debt that the US owes to China to be reset. So China has the same path as America - if they can fix and/or push off their impending economic crash, they can and almost certainly will be world superpowers when 2050 comes around.

As covered before; Brazil and Indonesia are likely going to grow in power, though I question their ability to become 'superpowers' - world powers with large amounts of influence, yes, but not world-leading powers.

I noticed that South Africa was on the voting list, I know that they are leaders in the continent of Africa, but do they really have the potential to become major world powers? I would appreciate it if some one explained to me how that would be possible.

If Germany doesn't fix it's population problems it'll die out by 2050
India will have a completely uncontrollably large population.
China will most likely stabilise its population, but will continue being the largest air and water polluter, which will cause serious problems.
South Africa is a pile of shit. Besides fascinating flora and fauna and diamonds it has got nothing.
Indonesia is also a pile of shit with a little better situation than SA.
The US better acknowledge global warming and get rid of all of the crazy nut job religious conservatives. And nut job militarists who want a nuclear war.
Japan should continue being a rather peaceful nation.
Russia better become a real democracy and not a third world country.
Brazil needs to at least become a second world country.
The UK should just stay pretty.
Same goes for Australia, Canada and New Zealand. (The stay pretty part)
Africa needs to be left on its own. Helping it increases its population.

OK... well... this is going to be hard for you to believe; but here I go trying to convince you of something you won't even consider believing:

1) The US acknowledges Global Warming and we have been in what I call "The Second Hippy Revolution" for at least five or six years now, technically more. Lots of advancements in bio-fuel and technologies like solar, hydroelectric, etc. The problem is just that: they are completely unreliable/unpredictable/don't produce nearly enough power. let's not start that argument here, there are plenty of other threads for that hot topic.

2) "Get rid of all the crazy nut job religious conservatives." First off, I don't appreciate you calling me, and many people I know that. My more left-wing friends wouldn't appreciate it either. More importantly, Americans have the right to believe whatever they want thanks to a thing called the US Constitution. Getting rid of all of those 'undesirables' would take some serious remodeling of the nation and everything that its people hold as moral and righteous.

3) "Nut job militarists who want a nuclear war." Last time I checked, the only people in America that wanted the entire world to be blown to pieces were some of those in asylums and any Al-Qaeda terrorists that have infiltrated the borders. But even if I'm wrong and you are right about that, their views are protected by the Constitution. Please refer to point #2 above.

It's definitely clear that you've chosen to believe a lot of propaganda that you've been told about America. I'm sure you'll just say the same about me, but I look out for our own propaganda. I in no way admit that we are infallible or perfect. What you said about some of the other countries are also not exactly 'nice'. I would go on to defend them, but it would be better if someone who could better represent them than me did.

Egypt?

Egypt has the potential, but only if they can establish some sort of government that remains stable and can keep the nation united. Otherwise their like the rest of Africa - one Dictator being bloodily overthrown by another, and another, and another, and so on, and so on.

South Africa, provided they can get their political problems sorted out. I can certainly see them starting towards stronger economic links with the rest of Africa, and they've certainly got the infrastructure to do it.

Indonesia, because of it's massive resource wealth and population base. It needs some serious effort to really bring it up to date, but I can see it joining the great powers in the East very shortly.

Brazil, because the problems it's having with corruption won't stick around forever. Brazil is already leading the way, and things like MERCOSOUR (or whatever it's called) as well as the fact that Brazil is starting to be an alternative to America for many nations in Latin America will only make this process quicker.
