13 year old father attempts murder over a video game

Postby Benomia » Sat May 04, 2013 3:42 pm

"Video games have been accused of fuelling youth violence after a 13-year-old boy slashed a friend’s throat following an online row.

He had only known his 14-year-old victim for a few months after they met online while playing Xbox game Gears of War 3.

Mr Brown said: ‘The pair had fall-outs online amounting to name-calling via the messaging system used in the game.’

The accused grabbed the 14-year-old then struck him across the throat with a knife. The victim told paramedics a boy had ‘slit his throat in an argument about Xbox games’. He suffered a wound so deep it exposed his windpipe and required 20 staples following surgery.

Then, in a scene reminiscent of violent video games – the accused sneered at his victim: ‘Don’t die,’ before calmly walking off. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted assault."

People don't kill people, video games do.

Ban them. Ban them all.

Except, GTA, COD and BF. I like those. Well at least MF was OK, the second and third one was meh. Don't even get me started on Black Ops.

What an asshole.

Coincidentally, BF would have you slit someone's throat, and then a couple minutes later saying "don't die" when trying to revive someone else.

Interesting how in two current threads on the front page, we both have examples of one child using a weapon on another.

only difference of course is that in this one, the kid lived. Funny that.

Covering the bases in preparation for the inevitable "ban video games" in a poor attempt to satirize gun control?

Agreed. If you could see the guy's windpipe, you know that he was on death's door.

Not...really. The windpipe (aka trachea) is pretty close to the skin. Press your fingers in the middle of your throat, that's your windpipe. It's only got a thin layer of skin. Those little ridges you feel are the cartiladge rings that the trachea is composed of.

SEVERING the trachea, yeah, that's pretty fucking serious, but "exposing" the trachea? It's like a few millimeters of skin.

Still required twenty staples.

From the viewpoint of a gamer, these are the types of people we love disassociating ourselves from. We aren't like that, the people who genuinely shouldn't be playing these games are. This of course wouldn't have happened had the parents been more responsible and known their son more. I, for one, would not buy my son (If I was a parent of course) Gears Of War 3 if I had any thought that he might do something like this.

So the arguments on tougher "Game control" are rather illogical. Games don't cause violence, people who play them do.

I'm not saying its PLEASANT, but I'm saying, if all it did is EXPOSE the trachea, and not sever it, or sever anything significant like the jugular, you're not exactly knocking on heaven's door. It's not GOOD, and still a pretty serious wound, but one that's perfectly surviveable.

I still think Fox's bullshit with Mass Effect encouraging bestiality was more amusing.
