Eighteen percent of Democrats said an armed revolt “might be necessary,” as compared to 27 percent of independents and 44 percent of Republicans. Support levels were similar among males and females but higher among less educated voters.

Not perfect. Necessary. Useful. Has its bad and good, but the government is an institution that the People need and has really great potential to do a lot of good.

Neo-liberals are the "real liberals" you talk about. Hayek and Friedman are Neo-liberals. I don't understand the huge aversion people have to the term. It's like rejecting the word "neoclassical".

Social liberals and such became prominent during the Keynesian consensus of the post-WWII period. They effectively displaced "classicals" and claimed liberalism for themselves. It was only after the 1970s energy shocks and stagflation, and the resulting free market crusade that "liberals" (in the way you're describing them) actually became a significant political force again.

Of course, there were also other people who used the name "neo-liberal", like the Ordoliberals of post-WWII Germany. Although they are liberals which favor free markets, they are leagues away from the US "the free market can do no wrong" sort of neo-liberals that emerged later.

So yes, you are a neo-liberal. Don't be ashamed of yourself.
