So move a few feet away then.

That's ridiculous. In the town I live in, since, according to state law, you can't smoke within ten feet of a business, walking down main street smoking is illegal. Not that it's really enforced. Depending on how the police force actually deals with this, I think it's ridiculous. Not allowed to smoke outside. Goddamn, America is getting too authoritarian for me.

Difficult to breath because someone a few feet away has... a cigarette? What?

2 reasons.
Bars are normally restaurants during the day.
Pregnant women make great DDs.

3rd reason: Restaurant workers/bar servers are a captive audience who may not wish to be exposed to toxins all day every day.

Because the people who work there have a right to clean air.

I'm a smoker, but I do not support the idea that smokers should be allowed to smoke in public places. But restricting outdoor smoking as well is just idiotic.

I'm a non-smoker, and I agree.

I can understand the playgrounds and sport fields. But not the beaches, parks (Kinda iffy but leaning towards yes), and trails.
Hey, it could be worse though. They could've banned smoking in general.

Since the ban on smoking here, the foot health of pigeons in the railway station has improved greatly.

There are no longer any pigeons with missing toes, or missing entire feet, from having stepped on a lit cigarette end.

cigarette ends are unsightly, and fiddly to pick up with a litter-picker. Restricting smoking in various places means less maintenance is necessary to keep an area looking tidy, which can be a useful amount of savings in maintenance expense.

weather, particularly air movement, is significant in how much of a nuisance smoke is. Still air, or gentle breeze, cause the most nuisance.

And does it work on grass surfaces?

No saving in maintenance costs either.

Smokers get used to the smoke so they tend to have no idea how horrible the stench is to those around them who struggle to breath because of their pollution of the air.

Excellent law. Smoking is retarded and restricting their right to do so will hopefully discourage it.

It's usually not possible to move far enough away while staying within the area required for waiting to cross the street. I'm tired of having to breath in the putrid cancer causing smoke that smokers thoughtlessness release into crowds.

You can tell who just reads the headlines and doesn't even glimpse at the article. :P

These are the same reactions I'm finding among local opinion, smokers that don't understand are up in arms about their "Right to smoke", on the other side of that, non-smokers that don't understand it are blindly supportive of it.

Meanwhile, the people that understand it, smokers or not, can coherently rationalize their stance on the issue.

Did I read the article?

This is probably the single most conceited post in the history of NSG. Congratulations on assuming that the people who support such ridiculous legislation are actually making coherent arguments rather than "I think tobacco should be banned period" and "I think smokers are evil and rude".

I read the article. I still think it's ridiculous. What does your little social experiment say now?

In Washington state it's illegal for a bar or restaurant to allow smoking.
